Northwestern Thread for Transfer Students

I bsed my essays and don't remember how many words. but i don't care cuz I got into berkeley.

Oh, and for anyone curious, I think the essay text fields actually did max out at 1000 words, so you couldn't go over that. Yes, I did find this out quite accidentally, and had to slim down a bit.

which essay was that which was over 1000?

lol wow 1000 at max i was at 700 or 800 , chibiutena how did u bs ur essays what did you talk about? Would u take UCB over NU ?

Well I talked about starting my own company (since i used that for UC). Something about cancer research that I do. And thats it. Don't remmeber much else.

All in all, I think I would take UCB over NU. Though NU is ranked higher, UC-B is higher on the "asian prestige" scale. The Berkeley name goes pretty far. Also, Berkeley is about 10 grand cheaper.

I'm also more proud of getting into berkeley out of state, in a highly competitive major (bio/premed) and the weather is nicer. I would withdraw my app if that would give me $60 back.

chibiutena, u started ur own company? That's soooooooo impressive! Now I'm scared! I'll be competing with people like u- no chance no chance no chance ! ha!

nosx thanks1 good luck to you too! I know I feel like I shud be punished for being so irresponsible with my apps----hopefully we'll all get in! that'lll be sooooooooooo awesome!

well bumpity he said he made that up lol

If you're 100% sure you won't go to NU, you'd be saving the admissions people time by withdrawing, and if you would be admitted, then maybe one borderline person could be accepted.

Only if you're 100% sure, of course.

lol! but which is more selective, northwestern or uchicago?

Well i paid $60 to see if i'm northwestern material. might as well wait it out.

yeah, i started my own start up company. i am/was ceo and we won $2000 in venture capital from the school business competition. i'm a bio major so that was a surprise.

By the percentages, it's Northwestern, but not as many people apply to Chicago, and it's 'self-selecting' and probably just as hard to get in to. Selectivity itself isn't a great reason to choose a college, although maybe it's a little important because it could imply an academically strong student body.

I've been waiting since January for a response. I think they might have already decided and are just waiting to send it out with everything else. Would like to be 3 for 3 (UCLA, UCB, NU) but it happens. I only had 1 recommendation too. From an english teacher no less.

Northwestern is ranked higher than U of C and I've also heard that its easier to get in. U of C is notorious for accepting valedictorians and excluding people with lower ranking while Northwestern is a little more well-rounded.

Or so I've heard. I went to U of C when I was still in high school and took a few classes on scholarship. Even worked at Argonne Labs when I was 16. U of C still rejected me.

I went to U of C summer school, we shall see if they will reject me! Thanks bumpity, I really hope I and you both do get in! Lol @ random I like your comment about him withdrawing his app, nice tactic! lol

That was some good tv.

UChicago is known for emphasizing essays and recs rather than number driven stats, but that doesnt mean it doesnt take pride in the number of valedictorians. I think their average SAT is also either better or equal to 4 of the Ivy's.

All in all I prefer UChicago, but I wouldn't mind having fun at college either ;)

Yeah the limit was 500 for the personal essay (1st one with 4 options) and no limit for the others but the lady told me usually ppl write 1-2 paragraphs...little did she know I write 500 word paragraphs!!!Mwuahahah

Nah I wrote 3 regular P's for the other two.

Honestly, I'm not confident at all, but because of various circumstances, I doubt that I would be able to go to NU (or any other school I applied to) even if I get in. However, if I get in now, work my ass off and maintain a better GPA and good ec's, it would mean that I will get in next year as well. Perhaps not necessarily but it would be pretty wierd for them to reject me under those circumstances.

I hate the need for money and restrictions places on noncitizines. UChicgo and NU both do not offer ANY financial assistance to international transfer students. Not a dime.

haha 500 word paragraphs, are you serious though only 1 to 2 paragraphs, they must either be really cheap or really well written and straight to the point.

hey now, the transfer pool is small! :)

actually, if you think about it, 2-3% of the applicants are posting on this board right now

Let's hope all 2-3% of us are among the ones who get in!
