northwestern's rival is............?

If you mean academically, I always see it compared to Brown. I have a friend from Indiana, and Purdue seems to feel some animosity for Northwestern, I think.

i meant football

Football...UIllinois.

It's a very weak rivalry though. For example, people wouldn't notice you if you wear Illinois shirt on Northwestern campus. Playing Illinois is nothing special--it's just another Big10 conference game. Real rivalry is like Stanford/Berkeley. Every year, they have "Big Game" in football, "Big Splash" in water polo, and "Big Spike" in volleyball all on the same day. If you wear Stanford shirt on Berkeley campus, you'll definitely draw attention. I personally like the lack of rivalry; it saves ourselves from silly petty emotion. ;)

Rivalry is an awesome part of the college experience. If you had rivals in high school sports, you know it's fun to always downtalk the other side even if they're way better than you and pretend not to like people from the other school because they're your rivals. Plus, there's just nothing like a Michigan-Ohio State football game. It's a shame Northwestern doesn't have this.

high school rivalry is awesome

michigan-ohio st.
stanford-uc
harvard-yale
texas-oklahoma
florida-florida state.

those are the big ones.

northwestern doesnt really have much since they arent that good at football (with this year being an exception)

maybe northeastern?

I always assumed U Mich was Northwestern's rival. I remember hearing somewhere that U Mich students would taunt NW because they were better at football, but Northwestern students had the last laugh, as when they got out of college, they'd get the better jobs...

I always thought that Purdue was Northwestern's rival, I even read it somewhere.

And in football, isn't Texas A&M UTexas' rival? Sure UT always wins, but a Longhorn/Aggie game is always exciting.

yeah. northwesterners would jiggle their car keys, symbolizing "laugh all you want right now but you're going to park our cars later on".

yeah, aggies and longhorns are rivals

michigan-ohio st.
stanford-uc
harvard-yale
texas-oklahoma
florida-florida state.

You gotta add Alabama vs. Auburn to that list. It's probably the 2nd biggest behind Michigan vs. OSU

Penn-Princeton

U of Oregon and Oregon State are HUGE rivals... how can you not talk about them? (stupid East coasters always haten on the Northern PAC 10... i HATE Cali...)

UMich isn't really rivals with NU. My dad's a michigan diehard, and he's most against Ohio St. and Notre Dame.

I figured academically, it'd be Brown, yeah. Football...I really don't know. Not exactly U of I...I mean, NU's a lot better so it's not really a tense rivalry in my opinion. I think it's basically whoever they're playing. Three days ago it was UCLA, for example. But we all know what happened THERE...

and USC vs. UCLA?

huge.

after all.. usc has the best football team in the country ;)

michigan-ohio st.
stanford-berk
harvard-yale
texas-oklahoma
florida-florida state
usc-ucla

Among these rivalries, I would say fla-fsu, stanford-berk, and usc-ucla are most intense. I don't live in FL, but from what I heard, fl and fsu fans really hate each other.

I live in Cal, so I know about Stanford-Berk and USC-UCLA rivalries. They not only rival in football but also practically everything including academics. On CC board for example, you see people from UCS-UCLA trashing each other on academics. They are also very close in most other sports. Berkeley rivals with Stanford in graduate programs. They are close in many sports though Stanford always seem to come out on top in most cases. My uneducated guess is that Mich-Ohio St. and TX-OU rivalries are more about football than anything else. The fact that they are not even in the same state, let alone cross-town, probably helps to limit it to pretty much just football.

duke v. UNC is also pretty intense when it comes to bball
