I know that Northwestern owns the mid-west but I was wondering how strong is Northwestern's alumni network in NYC? I have heard of the Northwestern mafia but from what I have read it seems to relate more to the entertainment world. I'm interested in the business sector and I would like to live close to New York City. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Don’t worry - Northwestern is a national university and there are plenty of alumni in NYC. When my daughter was applying I was amazed at how many friends/acquaintances graduated from both the undergrad and graduate programs and how excited they were to help.

NU has an alumni club in NYC and even an Alumni Relations office in NYC. They have a huge presence in New York so you should be able to find plenty of alums in the city. Several of my friends who just graduated moved there as soon as they finshed school.

Maybe it’s only my experience, but NU grads who want to go into “business” (code for: I have strong quant skills, I don’t mind long hrs, and high salary is important to me) tend to be more consulting than I-Banking. That might be a result of more consulting firms than I-Banking firms in Chicagoland, but it is worth throwing out there.

With that said, if you have a strong GPA and a Econ/Math background and can interview, then you can get a great job in “business” in NYC.
