Hi....I'm strongly considering UW, but I'm just not a sports fan at all.....I could care less about football, or basketball, or any of that stuff.....I know UW is big on the whole "Go Bucky thing", but that just doesn't interest me. I am, however, interested in the social sciences, LIVE MUSIC, and artsy stuff....Do you still think Wisconsin is a good school for me?

My D feels the same, hope someone will reply, as we're trying to decide whether to schedule a visit.

There is a lot of school spirit @ UW, but with so many students, I personally know many who are not as dedicated to the teams. One thing you should keep in mind is that outside of a few Saturday's when the football team is playing, even at the very rowdy basketball game, only a few thousand students are there. It's so easy to find a group (being that there are so many clubs and students) that you'd fit into.

How is Madison as far as live music, art, and culture?

Very good to excellent. The UW has a huge film festival yearly--it just finished--with over 150 films. The city has a new $200 million performing arts hall with concerts every week. It's just blocks from campus. The UW music school has many free concerts. The nightclub scene is good with excellent blues clubs and other venues. Many shows come to Madison so you can see most anyone.

As a current resident I agree with Barrons. Lots of stuff here both on and off campus; music from classical to rock, dance, theater, art. See the current on-campus schedule at:

I'm in the same boat as you - I'm a student here and I don't care about sports at all. Yes, a lot of people go to games and are "Go Bucky"-ish, but they mainly keep it to t-shirts and that's is (except on game day near the stadium. That, obviously, gets busy).

I have never been to a game and I don't feel like I'm missing anything. You'll find people who feel the same way. And as Barrons said, the Overture Center is quite a place, and they're adding on to it now. I had no idea that cost $200 million though!! Geez!

You'll find plenty to do. Even the people who don't follow the masses have their clubs to join, and believe me, there's plenty for everybody.
