Not A Generic Student With No Personality, Chance me

I have just finished my junior year, so I've gotten through most of the important stuff that colleges look at. I tried to organize things in different categories to make my profile more understandable.

Personal
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: Caucasian
State: NJ

Standardized Tests

SAT: 2160
Math: 740
Verbal: 690
Writing: 730
Just Math and Verbal: 1430

ACT:33
Math:35
Reading:34
English:33
Science: 28
I took the ACT with writing, but I didn't get my score for that yet. I expect it to be a good score because I got a 12 on my essay for the SAT.

**AP/B
English Language and Composition: 4-5
Psychology: 4-5
Chemistry: 2-3

SAT II
Math I: 700
Literature: 650 (this one sucks)

That's it for standardized tests. Now on to:

Secondary School Record

Just some quick background information on my high school, it's a Jewish Parochial school with about 60 people per class. There is a dual curriculum, and therefore the school day is very long. We get in at 8:00 and leave at 5:10. There are five levels of class rigor. From worst to best, they are as follows: Academic, College prep, Accelerated, Honors, AP. The Judaic classes do not offer the accelerated option. My school does not give A+

Freshman Year I was still sort of maturing at this stage, so my classes weren't the hardest possible. I've been told that colleges take into account that men mature later than women. I took one less class this year than my other 3 years.

Western Civilization (Not tracked)
Honors Biology
Accelerated Algebra 2
Accelerated English
College Prep Hebrew Language
College Prep Talmud (Judaic class)
College Prep Tanach (Judaic class)

I don't remember my grades in each class, but overall I had a 3.7 non weighted

Sophomore Year
Honors American History: B+
Honors English Language: B+ or A-
Honors Chemistry: A-
Accelerated Geometry: A-
College Prep Hebrew Language: A
College Prep Talmud: A
College Prep Tanach: A

Junior Year (This is when I really stepped it up)
AP English Language: A-
AP Chemistry: A- or A
AP Psychology: A
Honors American History: A
Accelerated Pre-Calc: B or B+
College Prep Hebrew Language: A
College Prep Talmud: B+ OR A-
College Prep Tanach: A

Schedule for Senior Year

AP Biology
AP English Literature
Jewish History (Not tracked)
Calculus (Not tracked)
College Prep Hebrew Language
College Prep Talmud
College Prep Tanach

My school does not rank, but I'm near the top. My guidance counselor said he will put me in as top 10-20%, depending on what each individual college looks for.

That's that. Now on to my favorite:

Extracurricular

Varsity Wrestling: This is the most important one to me, so I'll go into some detail. I started wrestling in 8th grade, knowing absolutely nothing. By the time I was a junior, I was beating district and regional place winners who have been wrestling since early childhood. My school didn't let me actually wrestle in districts or regionals because they took place on Saturday, which is the Sabbath. I was team captain for 2 years. I kept the team from falling apart, and I had to work heavily on recruiting. Went to multitude of camps and clubs. I am honestly one of the highest caliber athletes in my school.

Varsity Soccer: Walked onto varsity team with no experience junior year, and became a regular player halfway through the season.

West Point Summer Leadership Seminar: A program at West Point which is more competitive than the college itself. Simulates cadet life for one week, including combat and weaponry training, leadership reaction courses, classes, and physical assessment.

Work Experience: Golf Caddy, Construction, Painting

Columbia University Law Course, received A, instructor offers to write letter of recommendation. Going back this summer for Business Course.

Might do an EMS training course over the summer.

I did other random crap that I don't see as very important.

And finally, one last category:

Quality of Character

There are a lot of people in my school with academic records similar to mine, but my guidance counselor takes a special interest in me because of my character. In his words, there are plenty of generic, students with straight A's, but it's very hard to write most of them letters of recommendation because they are so boring. I have done things in terms of leadership that nobody else has done. He said that it will be very easy to write me a letter of recommendation because my accomplishments are already on the tip of his tongue. My teachers are crazy about me as well.

That's pretty much it. Please chance me at these schools:

Columbia University
University of Pennsylvania
Brandeis University (my mom was on the law review there)
Tufts
University of Miami Honors Program
Lafayette
University of Chicago
Washington University
NYU Stern
Full ride at Rutgers Honors Program
Northwestern
Stanford
Sizable scholarship at George Washington University

...and just for the hell of it, Harvard.

Thank you so much for your time.

Bump…

Here’s what I think. You have a very interesting school system, and I am sure the admissions officers know about it. It seems like you truly have taken advantage of the classes you have and have been showing growth during your 3 years there. That is good because it shows you are motivated. Your EC are awesome, and if your passion outside academia is in wrestling, that you really should write about that. Depending on how religious you are, that could be a possibility too. now the chances

Columbia University - they like intellectuals, so essay!! perhaps upping the subject scores in areas of interest would help, SAT I is not bad, your call i think SAT is really not a make it or break, i saw a lot of these school over the summer and most of them were SAT-last thing on priority list. reach like everybody
University of Pennsylvania-same as above
Brandeis University (my mom was on the law review there)-do u want law, if so good school, i saw match
Tufts-match/low reach
University of Miami Honors Program-match
Lafayette-not too familiar
University of Chicago-low reach/mid reach, essays are super critical
Washington University-reach
NYU Stern-low reach
Full ride at Rutgers Honors Program-(do u have this) good match u are from NJ
Northwestern-match/low reach
Stanford-PASSION for wrestling, hammer that home reach, like everyone, stats are good
Sizable scholarship at George Washington University- good school, u are prolly in.

Harvard- prolly same as STanford, UPenn, Columbia

Good luck, you are an interesting kid =)

Soooo…why arent you the generic student again? :stuck_out_tongue: I personally think there are a lot of kids out there who have good academics and still have a life…
Anyyyways. Your writing sounds a little arrogant and egotistic, imo…tone that down for your essays. Stanford and Harvard are definitely high reaches, esp bc while your GPA/SAT scores are solid they’re not outstanding. Great ECs, I think you’re good matches/low reaches at the other places you listed :P

Columbia University: mid reach
University of Pennsylvania: mid reach
Brandeis University: match
Tufts: match
University of Miami Honors Program: in
Lafayette: in
University of Chicago: low reach
Washington University: mid reach
NYU Stern: mid-high reach
Full ride at Rutgers Honors Program: probably in? i don’t know about the full ride though
Northwestern: mid reach
Stanford: high reach
Sizable scholarship at George Washington University: I would say in but I don’t know about the scholarship

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/735819-i-cant-believe-im-actually-doing-but.html</a></p>

I think you have a valid shot at most of these schools. I would maybe try and bring up the verbal score of the SAT and give some other SAT IIs a shot, it might help ya out.

stanford and harvard might be the only super reaches, but you have a sweet shot.

see my analysis above :P

Columbia University: low reach
University of Pennsylvania: reach
Brandeis University (my mom was on the law review there): match
Tufts: match
University of Miami Honors Program: match? idk much about the honors program…maybe low reach, then
Lafayette: match
University of Chicago: low reach
Washington University: reach
NYU Stern: not sure about this school, but I would guess match or low reach
Full ride at Rutgers Honors Program: in at Rutgers, full ride not sure :stuck_out_tongue:
Northwestern: prooobably in, if you do a good job on essays
Stanford: hiighhhh reach. but this is true for everybody
Sizable scholarship at George Washington University: match for the university, no idea on scholarships

Basically, you will get in at least one of these places taht you’re low-reaching for :P

Thanks for the responses guys. Yeah, I may come off as a bit cocky in the quality of character thing, but I am just repeating what my guidance counselor told me. Keep em coming, I’ll chance you back. By the way, I forgot to mention that my grandfather’s cousin has an entire wing in Stanford named after him, I don’t know if this would be considered a hook or not.

haha thats fine. what you lack in academic excellence/rigor you seem to compensate with athletics/personable traits. however… try to pile your efforts and do something over the top to reduce the reach for schools like Upenn/Stanford who dont just want to see (varsity soccer, varsity wrestler). youll have a good chance if you focus heavily on that west point program
chance back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/735826-mit-stanford-hopkins-chance-will-chance-back-promise.html</a></p>

Haha, I went to a dual-curriculum Hebrew school like yours all throughout middle school. I think your grades and scores are good enough for you to have a chance at your low reach/mid-reach schools (more so at Penn and Columbia than at Harvard and Stanford), but you really have to impress with your essays and your extracurriculars. (It’d also help if you could bring up your verbal score by 20 points or so.) I think the whole “commitment to wrestling conflicts with your commitment to Shabbat” thing would make for an interesting essay! Like, it’s hard to excel at sports or extracurriculars when most of those events take place on Saturdays, and you can’t really do anything about it. Also, I think Brandeis and Tufts are definitely good match schools.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/736550-chance-me-some-top-schools-please.html</a></p>

Jew power unite! I assume that you’re fluent in Hebrew? That’ll be a huge help. You’re obviously in at Brandeis (kidding)…but seriously, you have a good shot there. Cornell and Stanford might be reaches because your SATs aren’t astronomically high, but hey, they’re reaches for everyone. I bid you luck. Mazel tov!

I think your high school career has been really unique and colleges will respond well to that…the conflict between your wrestling passion and not being able to do it on Shabbat is something to slip in an essay. You went hardcore junior year, which colleges need to see in everyone. I’m impressed you seem to have gone straight from geometry to precalc.

Your reaches are reaches for everyone else as well: Harvard, Stanford, NW.
Your list of colleges seems a bit long imho. Are you really applying to all of those?

Columbia University- reach
University of Pennsylvania- reach
Brandeis University (my mom was on the law review there)- idk
Tufts- low reach
University of Miami Honors Program- low reach
Lafayette- idk
University of Chicago- tough make sure you have good essays and recs
Washington University- idk
NYU Stern-idk
Full ride at Rutgers Honors Program- idk
Northwestern- reach
Stanford- high reach
Sizable scholarship at George Washington University-low reach

chance back
good lucK!!

If you have the time, why not try to bring up your SAT and SAT II’s? That should give you the edge when applying for your reach schools
