Not exactly Harvard of the Midwest!

Chicago State allowed failing students to continue to enroll - chicagotribune.com

Michigan is the Harvard of the Midwest…

I won’t hold that against Michigan - promise.

At Harvard, instead of failing, they all would have gotten Gentlemen’s B-Minuses.

Mini, that totally depends on what department you’re in.

I can tell you from bitter personal experience that some departments at Harvard believe in using, let us say, the entire alphabetic range of grading options.

Someone told me Carleton is the Harvard of the Midwest. :D

Maybe we should bookmark the article so the next time we get a post along the lines of “OMG I got an A- in AP Calc” or “Totally screwed - only got a 2380 SAT” we can prove that there are indeed colleges for the less than perfect …

So what? :)

As long as all those students are paying their own tuition, its a free choice for the school.

I’m sure that very few of these students were attending on someone else’s dollar.

And every school seeks to enroll the best students available. It would appear that these students fell into that category.

My reaction was the same as mini’s - it would likely take equal persistence to flunk out of Harvard.

^^ @dadx: Well, not exactly. As in Chicago STATE, which means that the taxpayers of Illinois are footing the bills. 67% get state-based aid. And 70% of students get federal money so guess what, outlanders, you’re paying for this too!

HugeDomains.com;

And the point of the article is that the college is lying about its numbers.

This is hardly news. Chicago State has been a fraud and an embarrassment for a very long time now. The sad thing is that there are kids who enroll there thinking that they’re going to college.

^ I agree. The kindest thing the state could do would be to shut it down. It’s got a middle 50% ACT range of 16-18, a four-year graduation rate of 3 percent (no that is not a typo), and a six-year rate of 14 percent. The kindest thing we could do for these students would be direct them to CCs, then let those that thrive there transfer to real 4-year colleges.

One could say pretty much the same thing for the other in-city state university, Northeastern Illinois: 16-21 ACT range, 3% four-year rate.

But politically, it ain’t gonna happen, even given the severe fiscal crisis that we’re in here in the Land of Lincoln.

Um, not with the Emil Jones Convocation center newly built. . . .

One state over is Indiana State University, which is almost as dismal overall (with the exception of a few good departments). They have been pouring money into it th last few years, but now only have 19% 6 year grad rates. The ACT is between 17-22 and the GPA is between 2.6-3.2. This is the school of last resort for many. Funny thing is, many of our state’s teachers also come from this campus since the education department is one fo the better ones in the state.

For some, Harvard is not the Holy Grail- son wouldn’t even look at it when he visited MIT a few years ago. Nor was Michigan on the radar (we have UW-Madison).

Regarding this school- it is a shame they are taking any student money for such a poor school. Those who succeed would probably be best off at a different school.

Schools have different missions- not surprised a school excels at teacher education but not other areas. Former state teachers colleges became state universities in Wisconsin many decades ago, but with improvements so other fields could be good as well.

"Michigan is the Harvard of the Midwest… "

Actually, Harvard is the Michigan of the east.

No, seriously though, Chicago State is Harvard of Midwest? Average ACT: 18, Average HS GPA: 2.9, Graduation rate: 14%.

The Harvard of the midwest is Harvard. It’s also the Harvard of the north, south, east and west. It draws kids from all over.

I like how people are getting caught up discussing what was merely the joke of the title.

Well then…

“Mr. Dorfman… 0.2. … Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son.”
“Daniel Simpson Day HAS no grade point average. All classes incomplete.”
“Mr. Blutarsky … Zero…point…zero.”

Pretty much :D

Eh, other schools are better at drawing kids from afar. Though I agree that making “Harvard” synonymous with “the best school” is rather ridiculous. Harvard is Harvard, nowhere else is. Stanford is Stanford, nowhere else is. Michigan is Michigan, nowhere else is. Chicago State is… a disgrace.
