Basically, I REALLY do NOT want to attend the UCLA transfer orientation because of its $160 cost (and also because I get severe anxiety when meeting new people- Im an introvert and spending an entire day like that would be overwhelming for me). Since I will most probably not be attending orientation, I wanted to ask if anyone knows how I will proceed in regards to registering for my classes, getting advice/counseling for my major, and how to complete the mandatory sexual harassment education videos that they show during orientation.
I know I won’t be the only one to skip orientation, so If someone else here is also planning on not going, please give me some advice on your plan of action and how you plan to proceed with the things that are usually covered during orientation. My biggest question is on how one will register for their classes if one does not attend orientation.
Any advice/tips will be appreciated, especially from students who themselves skipped orientation.
I encourage you to go. Everyone will be nervous trying to meet new people and it won’t be just you. If you skip orientation you will enroll last. And classes are not reserved like they are for orientation.
you should take 10s4life advice and just go… You’re gonna be at UCLA now and thus you’re gonna eventually have to learn to get out of your shell and interact w/ new people. Why not get it over with in a setting like orientation, when everyone else is new as well? I kinda see where you’re coming from cuz Im naturally introverted as well, but its just one of these situations you have to learn to deal with. Also $160 is nothing in the grand scheme of things, you’d end up regretting not going if you jeopardize your class schedule for the first quarter.
If you miss orientation, you will miss your opportunity to schedule the classes you need at decent hours. Or, you may not get into them at all.
Few, if any freshman will know anyone at the orientation. Usually, the leaders are really good at reading the students and will approach you with care. The schedule is full, but you will have an opportunity to be by yourself if you need quiet time. Not everyone is a rah-rah kind of person.
People who miss orientation either have a travel or medical emergencies, OR they didn’t understand that orientation involves your student schedule, id badges to get into buildings and dorms, department meetings, etc.
Call the admissions office and tell them you need to reschedule your pass time and hope that you can get into classes that you can use toward your degree.
If the first barrier is cost, email or call the financial aid office to see if you can defer the payment until after your financial aid kicks in. Maybe they’ll let you get by with a deposit now then the rest after.
Your life will be so much easier if you go. You will forget about the people from your orientation group and pretty much everything but the stuff you need to know. Classes are almost already all full, with the exception of a few spaces reserved for orientation. Take advantage of it. You may not feel like an outsider after.
Otherwise, Contact admissions and see if there’s any supplementary material for it you miss an orientation.
@“aunt bea” unfortunately the OP cannot call admissions to schedule an earlier past time. Ucla has a policy that current students have an randomly generated past time and incomming freshman and transfer students will have spots reserved at orientation only. After the last orientation all class spots become unreserved and current students can enroll as a free for all then the incoming students do a virtual orientation and enroll with leftover spots. Everyone needs a class to graduate so that argument won’t fly with the registrars office.
