Not in NHS

My school is very biased and does not select the NHS members very well. I have many hours of volunteer work, participate in multiple sports, have all honors classes, and have been on honor role all throughout high school. Yet I am not in NHS. I want to go to the University of Florida. I was wondering if you think I will be able to get in even though I’m not in NHS or will not being in it be a deal breaker? I have a good GPA but haven’t taken the SAT and ACT yet. But I just want to know if not being in NHS means I won’t be able to go to UF?

Not even slightly.

The value of NHS in college admissions is vastly overrated by students. Your GPA & test scores, your ECs and your essays, your LoRs are all substantially more important.

Your school is not the only one where NHS selection is not seen by all as fair, and colleges are aware of this.

One thing, though: think carefully- and honestly- about why it might be that you have not beed selected. It still might not be ‘fair’, but learning to perceive & understand how others see and evaluate you is a useful life skill, and if you can learn something from it that’s even better. This is especially important if any of the adults in the selection process will be involved in writing LoRs for you.

I don’t think that NHS matters much, if at all. One of my daughters didn’t even bother to apply, and was accepted to every school that she applied to. The other only applied because it allowed her to wear a better looking tassle for graduation (she wasn’t going to bother until she attended her boyfriend’s graduation a year earlier and thought “that looks good”).

Nothing to worry about here. Keep ahead in your classes, do some SAT preparation, and you should be fine.

NHS doesn’t matter.

“I have many hours of volunteer work, participate in multiple sports, have all honors classes”>>>>>>>NHS

I’ve been so nervous this feedback is awesome

Thank you so much for putting my mind at ease! I’ll definitely take your advice too! Thank you!!

If it would make you feel better check on some other honor societies. D15 felt that the Spanish honor society was excellent. She was not accepted into the NHS because she didn’t have leadership and she did just fine in admissions. It won’t matter at all. Schools will look at many other (more relevant) factors!

My son wasn’t in NHS and no one cared. He got into every college he applied to and got scholarships and honors college. Not a single person asked. Take a deep breath! GPA. test scores and ECs!
