not listing ap scores

i was reading a chances post on the caltech forums the other day, and there was one kid who had like 6 5s on aps, and like 4 4s. Ben Golub (the adcom person for caltech) told the kid that he should not list the 4s, and that they might hurt the application.
i was under the impression that 4s were still good to list. Is it just at caltech that the 4s will hurt? or will it hurt at any other top university? I have a 5 5s and a 4 in comp sci, should i list the 4?
thx a lot!

Yes, of course! 5's and 4's are both good to report.

A good rule of thumb- if it gets you AP credit at that school, report it.

So if I got a 3 on APUSH, I shouldn't put it down?

Eh, it depends on the school. If you're applying to Harvard, Caltech, etc., then no, I wouldn't put it down. For schools that aren't as nitpicky (outside the top 20-25 or so, I'd say), put it down, but even for the top schools it may be ok if the exam is very difficult. Use my rule of thumb! :)

NYU, BU, UMich

well that's because he got 4s in like science which is major for caltech

parikhs- Fine for all of them.

Also, kind of off topic, but do colleges take passion for a field over stats? If I exemplified a passion for business throughout my 4 years by starting organizations, interning, starting companies, and becoming the leader of clubs related to business. My stats are avg for the schools I'm applying too...probably the lower 50% range. BTW in all those schools I'm applying to the business program.

Aren't the schools going to see all your scores anyways? Don't they all come on the transcript from CB?

my school reports all APs so I'm going to report my failing AP compsci score anyways so they don't think i'm trying to be sneaky or anything

My school makes anyone who wants a transcript fill out and sign a form with a space to indicate any scores one wants withheld. I asked that my AP Chemistry score (2) be removed.

I think AP scores are reported separately from SAT scores, if that's what you're saying.
