I’m currently a sophomore in hs and I really want to go to UC Santa Cruz or Santa Barbara. The problem is that I’m not sure if I can complete 11 out of 15 of the A-g requirements prior to senior year because I don’t know if I can fit everything into my junior year schedule. If I can’t, does that automatically take any chance of getting into a UC away?
Are you an in-state California student?
Usually, your guidance counselor helps you with your schedule so that you can get the requirements met.
If you plan on going to the UC’s, those A-G requirements are a must. Requirement is a key word here.
Which A-G course requirements will you be lacking? There is always Summer school at your HS or Community college prior to Junior or Senior year where you can take some of the courses.
Don’t worry, you can have the courses in progress senior year.
Make sure you have covered the visual/performing arts requirement. A lot of students get stuck on that one. Remember that it is a full year of a graded class.
You can apply by examination. That is what my son had to do as a non traditional school student. http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/freshman/requirements/examination/
Just an FYI using admission by examination. Although it is an option as a non-traditional applicant or home schooler, there is no guarantee that it will be accepted. The website states “you may be considered” and MAY is the operative word. If you go to a regular HS, you are far better off taking the courses during the summer if you cannot fit them in during your school year or a semester at a community college.
