What happens if you don't pass Bio 93 this fall quarter and you're a bio sci major? By not passing, I'm talking about receiving a D or worse in class. When I checked the class schedules, they're not offering Bio Sci 93 next quarter. Chemistry for example, is offering Chem 1A near quarter again though. Since the bio sci core curriculum is intense, I don't know how I'm going to be able to keep up with the bio classes. I hope my classes are not going to fall behind one whole year for not being able to pass 1 class. Because it would be weird for me to take Bio Sci 93 next year in the fall as a 2nd year. Plus, that wouldn't really work out because then, I wouldn't be meeting certain requirements to take upper division classes later on.

According to the catalogue or when you look at SOC to enroll class, the prerequisite of bio 94 is the completion of bio 93. Theres no grade prerequisite. You can continue on with bio 94. As long you complete the class on this quarter, your okay. I’m assuming that you didnt do well with bio 93, you can retake that in the summer and only in the summer, cause for your next fall you have to take bio 97. Don’t worry like half of your class are probably the same situation as you. If there was a grade requirement, half of you would have to take another year in school. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply but on the schedule of classes/webreg, it says as the minimum grade policy that “Beginning Fall 2010, students must earn a grade of “C-” or above to advance to the next Bio core course. For example, you must earn a “C-” or better grade in Bio Sci 93 to move onto Bio Sci 94, 97, 98 and 99.” I’m so confused.

Jessica,
I think it is time to ask yourself the fundamental question: Why am I studying Biology?

The answer should be: I have a passion for Biology.

If it is “to be a doctor” or “my parents force me” or anything other then the answer on top, you are in the wrong school with the wrong major. I am assuming you do not have a passion for it because you probably dont have the enthusiasm to study.

Biology is a very competitive major in UCI. If I were you, I would first change my major to psychology or humanities. This way, you save yourself from future killer Bio/science courses. Then, retake Bio your sophmore year. DO NOT TAKE IT OVER SUMMER. If you didint pass on the long regular schedual, I am 200% sure you wont pass on the faster and shorter summer schedual.

I am assuming your career involves Biology. So, after Soph year, in Junior year take Biochem or another upper div. Bio class.

UCI OVER-ENROLLS in their Bio school knowing that they will “expell” 25% of their incoming class to other majors at UCI. Their classes are crazy tough and are just going to get tougher.

Just my 2 cents

Disclaimer: I am not in UCI but I have many many many close friends that attend, so I understand the system fairly well.

Good Luk
Feel free to message me or reply if you have any questions

I think what happened to my friend was that he had to retake it next fall or during summer school. It wasn’t until a couple years after that he finally decided to change his major…
From the beginning I wanted to convince him to change out of his major since he couldn’t even handle a freshman course. as SuperHenry says, UCs are known to weed out kids in bio.
If you messed up and you think it’s just a one time thing and you want to do bio, then retake it. But if you think you can’t handle bio, please please just get out sooner rather than later! My friend ended up failing/getting D’s in a ton of other bio/chem classes…

OP, is BIO the major that you really want? Do you see yourself taking these types of classes for the rest of the time here at UCI? As a previous poster mentioned, I also recommend seeking alternatives.

I’m no BIO major, but if you cannot do well in one bio course, shouldn’t you expect similar results for other BIO courses?

How are you doing in your other classes? Now is the time to explore your options. Make decisions fast and wisely, as time goes by too quickly here in college.

It just seems like yesterday that I just moved into my dorm room… and here I am, week 7 on my fall quarter of sophomore year.

Get out while you can if you’re having any doubts about this major!!

Yeah, the soonest you can take Bio 93 again is in the summer, and it’s definitely much tougher then. ;_; I mean, I guess it’s possible to catch up with the rest of the BioSci students by taking 93 in the first summer session and 94 in the second one, but… that seems ridiculously difficult. Honestly, I’m kind of in the same position as you, OP. I know the courses are all rigorous, but I don’t want to change out of this major.

You will have the option of taking it in the summer or next fall, they’ll allow you to proceed to take bio 97 (I have had friends in similar boats). I am unsure about how academic probation works on freshmans with only a quarter of experience, but they might make you sign a contract saying you have to have a certain GPA or else you’ll get the boot.

Also, you may want to look into LARC (a paid tutoring program) or attend free weekly tutoring sessions at <a href=“EEE+ Home | UCI”>EEE+ Home | UCI; if you find that you lack discipline or are having difficulty with the material.

Like the others have suggested, if you feel that bio is not your passion, then you can opt out and make a switch. But for the record, I think bio 93 was the hardest core class for me.
