Not selected for Honors program

My son was not selected for the VCU Honors program but regular study. He intends to go pre-med. He has a 4.5 GPA, 5th in his class, class president, ACT 28, went to Boys State, class officer for Latin Club and the list goes on. I can’t for the life of me figure out what the problem is. Can someone shed some light on this for me ? Thanks.

He should be in Honors in my opinion: he has a great GPA and ACT score. VCU isn’t like a top school so I don’t know why he didn’t get in Honors. Does he intend to go there for pre med, I’m sure that he could have gotten into several other schools that have a better pre med program like UVA. When did he apply and receive his decision. I still haven’t received anything and I’m waiting. It’s been 10 weeks since they received my application.

What was his unweighted GPA if you don’t mind me asking?

I think it’s a 4.0. All A’s even with AP’s.

He applied to UVA but did not hear anything yet. Yes, he wants to go Pre-Med. I have a feeling that the competition was fierce but…

If he gets into UVA, you guys should consider it over VCU. UVA has a highly ranked pre med program compared to VCU. I applied for computer science at UVA but I have no shot there. As for the honors situation, I would recommend writing a polite email to admissions to discuss the reason he didn’t get in. It may be a long shot since they will probably say what you wrote that the competition was fierce, but its worth a try.

Thank you !!! Good luck to you in getting into UVA. That is my son’s first choice. With how this VCU thing played out, I am not holding out much hope that he will get in.

UVA is a hard school to get into, but he stands a decent chance with his stats! Thats also a pretty good school and he would 100 % get in there

No. UVa 1st, VCU 2nd and Tech 3rd. He also got into JMU and GMU but unless its an offer he can’t refuse, he won’t even think about it.lol

I think he will still choose VCU if he doesn’t get into UVa.

If he’s that smart and still wants to go to VCU then he can still get into the honors program. He has to wait another year, but it will be less competitive.

Thanks. I just don’t get it. Does anyone know how many freshman they take ?

@Beckham2009 From the VCU site: “All prospective freshmen who apply to The Honors College by Feb. 1 will be notified of our admissions decision by April 1.”

My son meets the criteria also. I was feeling a bit insulted too, so I looked it up. My interpretation is that they notify separately from the admission offer.

Yes. I think that his 28 ACT score did it, sadly.

I think the problem is the ACT score. The minimum ACT score is 29. He meets the GPA requirement but not the test score requirement.

We found tonight that he got into UVA so it’s all good.

Just got my acceptance to the VCU honors college today, it came about 1 week after the regular acceptance letter, so for anyone else waiting to hear back, if you haven’t received the honors letter yet and are qualified, it’s possible you will soon!
