Not taking AP Literature. Will it affect admission chances?

I will be taking 5 other AP classes over the course of my senior year so I will probably be busy. I am currently taking AP Language and I have an A as a junior, except I really want to take CP English next year because I heard AP is much harder and busier. Will me taking CP English instead of AP affect my chances of admission (especially with a selective school)? Thanks for the help.

There’s your answer. Schools don’t expect a student to take every AP offered. they know that kids have to pick and choose based on their schedule, conflicts, etc

5 is already a lot of APs.

My son got an A and scored a 5 in AP Eng Language as a Jr, and did not take Eng Lit as a Sr, and got into NU engineering. It helped that the AP English conflicted with Physics C - but he he wouldn’t have taken AP lit regardless because of the time commitment.

As far as how this might affect you and your selected school? Only the AdCom will know for sure. You could check your school’s website - you might not even be able to get more credit by taking both APs - even with scoring 5 on both.
If that is how it works - you should be able to dodge the Eng Lit. course. Good luck.

What if I was planning to apply to a highly selective school like University of Pennsylvania? I feel that many other of the kids applying will be taking that AP class and I will essentially be behind all of them. Is this a valid thought?

I’ve done my research and the amount of AP’s you take isn’t as significant as you might think. You’re already taking way more AP’s than the average applicant (which may be to your surprise). If you don’t want to take it, don’t. It will only help you do better in your other AP courses by taking Honors Eng. Good luck!

I agree, even the top colleges don’t expect students to take every AP offered. At a certain point they are looking beyond the rigor anyway at the rest of your applications. Five is plenty of AP courses for senior year. Take the English class you prefer to take. There isn’t a college in the country that would ding you for taking 5 instead of 6.

5 APs is A LOT. Take the English class you like, especially since it’ll help you distinguish yourself if you can speak coherently and with passion about that choice.

I don’t think admission offices expect students to take an all AP course load. They expect AP classes in your intended major or fields of interest. If you’re not interested in literature, then skip it. Several colleges only grant AP credit to either Lit or Lang, not both. (Penn doesn’t grant credit for either AP exam, FWIW)

Also see if there is an Honor version of English.
