not tenting?

Is it "bad" if you don't tent freshman year? I've never really been into basketball and I'm taking really hard classes next semester, so I don't feel the need to tent?

yes. it's very very bad.

No, it is NOT bad. Lots of people do not tent. My D did not tent and she was very enthusiastic about basketball.

Her roommate came back in the middle of the night from tenting as another tentmate had thrown up on her sleeping bag. After hearing that story from her roommate she was glad she had decided NOT to tent!

Not tenting freshman year is only bad if you want to get into the Carolina game. Otherwise, whatever. (it's not like you can't go visit K-ville)

Though I would consider it. I wish I had tented freshman year and can't really do it now. I thought I was getting into the game with the Chorale but then they couldn't let everyone in and freshman got the boot. (now I'm an RA and tenting is rather... difficult to do)

I actually have heard a lot of negative things about tenting. I know a lot of people who are doing it but I think I'll pass and just visit them from time to time. It separates the men from the boys in the sense of "HOW MUCH DO YOU ACTUALLY GIVE A DAMN ABOUT DUKE BASKETBALL??"

don't feel the need to tent -- especially not for a long time.

and if you realize you're handling your schoolwork/the semester well, and don't mind sticking around a few days into spring break, then definitely try and get in on white tenting -- just one week, you'll probably only spend one night in the tent outside of personal checks.

I know you're not going to get tickets to the big games (i.e. UNC) if you don't tent, but can you get tickets for ANY game if you choose not to?

Yeah the policy for all the other games is still the same...tenting people get no advantage other than that they're always in kville so they can get right in line easy.

You can def. get into any other game you want besides UNC.

I haven't tented either- and I don't feel like my Duke experience has been compromised. There are some schedule's that just aren't conducive to living in a tent.

KYLE SINGLER WOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOO.

lol, he came from OREGON !

yeah i don't think i'm gonna tent

what is tent????

^"to tent/tenting" is used as a verb at Duke. It means to camp out in a tent for basketball games.

Honestly, white tenting is almost easier than the walk-up line to most games. You have to spend 1 or 2 nights in the tent, and something like 10 hours over the course of 1.5 weeks, plus personal checks. As a freshman, you'd be in K-ville during PCs anyways, so you might as well get into the game. Blue tenting takes much more dedication, on the other hand. And you aren't guaranteed to get a tent for white because it fills up quickly when they release the secret location online, so it's riskier. In my four years, they have made white tenting easier and easier every year. It's gotten shorter with more grace periods given. Going to the UNC game is amazing, and I'd encourage all Duke students to do it. White tenting is seriously not a big commitment so unless you have 3 exams the week before UNC (and that would be cruel for profs to do that), if you are even a moderate fan of basketball, you should try to get a tent together.

I really wish I could tent. I love basketball, but I just don't have the time. I am definitely going to white tent.

Could I still get to see the Duke vs. UMD-College Park in Feb. even if I don't tent? I mean, I haven't been to a b-ball game yet, but the Maryland game and the UVA game are two games I definitely want to see.

You could just white-tent before the game.

Yes, you can get into the games without tenting at all. Also remember that tenting is only for two games (and sometimes one) - UNC and one other. The walk-up line is probably more effort though (than white tenting), but only over the course of the last two days. Tents are capped at 100 with a maximum of 12 occupants per tent, so that's a max of 1200 if all the tents are completely full (which isn't usually the case). 1200 is the supposed capacity of the student section, but for big games they typically allow 1500+. It all depends on what Fire Marshall is on duty and when he cuts off the line and says no more. And also how much the students squeeze by turning sideways to fit in as many people as possible. I've heard they've fit as many as 1700-1800 a few times....

However, Maryland this year should be no problem getting in via the walk-up line because they are TERRIBLE this year, so demand for that game will not be very high. Is that really the other tenting game?

i recall that people my freshman year (spring 06) had signs and chants like "we tented for this??" for wake forest, which was the first tenting game of the year
