I asked one of my teachers who recently left my school to write a letter of recommendation for me. I gave her the online link to the Naviance program, but the program wasn't working, so she did it by hand and when we met to discuss it, i noticed that it wasn't the common app recommendation form. Is it ok if it's submitted to the college and not with the common app form? And will it show up on the common app screen under the common app recommenders section? I'd appreciate your help! Thanks.

The only way teacher recommenders show up on the common app screens is if you “invite” them through the common app or thru Naviance (i don’t know how Naviance hooks up). So this teacher’s name will not show up on the common ap screens.

Since it sounds like your teacher gave you the letter, you can make the copies and mail them to each school. Include your common app ID number on the top of the letter so it is easier for colleges to match it to your file.

Alright. At my school naviance isn’t working, so everyone is sending them by post. one teacher already submitted it through post but with the common app forms, and it shows up in my common app online box, and I didn’t invite them through the common app online. I think that I’m just going to do as you said to write my common app id# on the envelope (it’s sealed, and i don’t want to break the seal because of ethicallity). And if everything goes well with that, should it all be alright even though it’s an unorthodox form?

Our school had a similar problem with Naviance so my son’s counselor who must have been the main computer guy went in and turned off that feature that makes students have to go through Naviance to request recs from teachers. You might suggest your school do the same.

Teacher recs and counselor recs can be snail mailed. In terms of forms, I tend to think it won’t matter if the rec form your teacher used was a basic teacher rec form. Some schools use both the common app and their own so those recs are different as well.

You can always call the school if you are unsure.

Alright. Thanks a bunch!
