WL last year may not be in line historically because many kids deferred so colleges went to their WL more than usual.

In 2019:

1,600 were WListed
1,028 accepted a place on the WL
108 WListed students admitted

In 2020:

1,778 were WListed
1,253 accepted a place on the WL
530 WListed students admitted

Yeah, it makes total sense because in-state yield for colleges around the nation were increased and more people took gap years not trying to do Zoom University. I’m sure ND took this into consideration when deciding how many people they were going to admit, but there’s a chance waitlist admits might become higher due to some of these factors.

My D completely rejected not even waitlisted. Team USA and toured the world representing US and garnering international awards. She is an A student and a 1510 SAT. I am gobsmacked. It was her top choice. 2nd gen legacy. Crazy demonstrated interest. She is crushed. I have no words to comfort her. Sad day.

D21 waitlisted. Dream school for the last 4+ years. Top 2% of her class, varsity athlete 4 years plus captain, NHS, and many ec’s. She was deferred REA and the waitlist now just feels cruel. If they wanted her they’d have accepted her in one of the two decision rounds. She’s gotten acceptances with merit at other top tier schools. She’s heartbroken but we’re moving on. Love the school that loves you back.

I’m so sorry. I am hoping she finds the perfect fit. It’s so hard though.

Accepted at umich, WashU, Northwestern. I was very surprised he did not get into Notre Dame, but goes to show you never know what will happen.

It feels very random this year. My son was accepted ND, Michigan and UVA and rejected at Wustl!

Thanks! I appreciate your kind words.

I see your S also applied to Vandy. We’ll see each other here next week!

I don’t expect him to get accepted there, we sure hope so.His top 3 were ND, WashU and Vandy. Waitlisted at both ND and WashU. We aren’t giving up on ND. Look forward to next week with the CC family.

It’s tough. My DS got waitlisted at WashU, got into ND, waitlisted at Johns Hopkins and flat out rejected at UW. Never knew this ride would be such a roller coaster. Was very different 4 years ago when my DD was a HS senior.

That is a tough one to understand. It really seems like the waters are very muddied this year. With all the applications up, lack of visits to demonstrate interest, test optional, deferred students from last year, it’s got to be daunting for the admissions committees to figure it all out. Your son has great choices and will do well.

I’m so sorry, it doesn’t make sense. I hope she takes it in stride. This is rough on so many.

Daughter waitlisted. I agree with most on here that “it doesn’t make sense.” I don’t envy the college admissions counselors at these schools. On paper, my daughter’s stats are at the top end of the ND “range” -1520 SAT, multiple AP 4’s and 5’s, ranked #1 in her class, excellent ECs and is a very good essay writer (And she’s our 4th “High achieving” kid to be going to college - including one other that was ND Waitlisted, so I have some experience in evaluating these things). The fact is, once a student is grouped with the “qualified” applicants, all of these top tier schools are like lotteries. The people evaluating the students must rely on their own feelings for what makes a good fit for their school, and I know they are doing the best job they can. I know it’s difficult to accept a rejection at a school you considered your “dream” school, but don’t lose heart. I’m sure you are all amazing students, who likely have multiple good offers at other top universities. Try to not look at the negatives, and think about all of the opportunities you have in front of you!
