Notre Dame EA Class of 2020

Agree. Please take this discussion to a new thread. Stop spoiling this thread with such tripe.

D2 was deferred, then rejected last year. At the time we were devastated, to put it mildly. D’s older brother is an alum (in a named giving society) and I had worked as an admission volunteer for many years. It took about 6 months to get over the feeling of being personally rejected, but we’re all coming around to loving ND as we always used to. It’s an amazing university; unfortunately, there’s not room for everyone who is qualified to attend. It’s as simple as that.

I’ve always believed that we need to trust that God will put us where we’re meant to be in life. My own words were tough to accept last year, but in hindsight D’s “rejection” was good for her. It made her stronger and she’s thriving in ways we’d never imagined at her Back-up College.

To those who were deferred or rejected, stay strong. To those who were admitted, congratulations; I hope you make the decision to attend!

ND is 81% Catholic. Comparable institutions are Yeshiva, Liberty University, Loma Linda, and BYU.

DD accepted with a 35 ACT, 4.4 WGPA, Captain of Dance Team, National Merit semi-finalist, Summer research, NASA aerospace scholar and lots of community service. We are thrilled but will have to wait til other colleges come in in late Spring.

This^^^ For all of you who were denied with great stats or deferred, understand that TONS of these accepted EA students will actually elect NOT to go to Notre Dame. ND has only a 56% yield (vs. Harvard 90%+), and so the regular round is much less competitive as ND has to fill up its class somehow and the bar gets lowered. The difference between a “great” school and a “good” school is that the name on the resume, if read in a place like Enid Oklahoma will make the reader raise the proverbial eyebrow; outside of a narrow swath of the midwest, eyebrows are hard to raise with ND.

So – don’t take it too hard. There are tons of schools out there that are equivalent to ND – great traditions, great alumni bases, great educations, lots of fun, etc.

@IndySparkPlug, your daughter definitely sounds s]like a stellar candidate, and it is a real shame that the cards did not fall in her favor. She will undoubtedly be a VERY attractive candidate for another highly selective school.

Just a thought: An intangible in this holistic process (that few are discussing) is the essay piece. I have to say, most of them are cookie cutter. Why XX college? How will you use your area of interest? But Notre Dame and (I think) Virginia had provocative and interesting supplementals. Perhaps they placed a lot of weight on them? I don’t know. Best of luck to her as she goes forward.

@makennacompton To be fair, ND’s “only” 56% yield is one of the best in the country, and among top schools, ND is one of less than a handful that doesn’t have a SCEA or ED program that artificially increases yield (with ED applicants bound to go if admitted, producing a 100% yield, or SCEA applicants bound not to apply early to any other private school, such as Harvard SCEA). ND enjoys an extremely high number of applicants for whom ND is their first choice.

Welcome to the ND family guys! Excited to see you guys next August, maybe a couple of you will have me as one of their Welcome Weekend orientation leaders if any of you are lucky to be part of the best dorm on campus- O’Neill Hall.

Harvard’s yield is 85%. Duke has a lower yield (42%) and while ND is right around a top 10 school on yield, UofChicago and Columbia have yields only slightly higher (61% and 62%, respectively). Facts.

ACT 31- accepted. Gpa was 4.0 uw and 4.71 weighted. IB diploma candidate with 4 HL classes and 4 AP classes.

Accepted. 33 ACT, 4.0 GPA (unweighted), 800 Math 2 SAT subject test, Rank 5/300, Eagle Scout, 12 AP classes , Student Government, Varsity soccer, Quick Recall Co-Captain and MVP (first two years), NHS, Beta Club, Club Soccer, Scored in top 10 of entrance exam to high school/awarded scholarship, Accounting and Pre-Calc academic awards, UVa Jefferson Book award, about 250 service hours,People to People Leadership program, strong essays and recommendations

@Turk71 While your GPA is impressive, for the peace of mind of many who were denied with much higher test scores, perhaps you could illuminate some aspects of your resume? I’m certain you must have had some great leadership, ECs, etc. Hook? Sports? Legacy?

No legacy, no sports, no unusual hooks and ordinary ECs. Just solid academics, good essays and probably stellar recommendations.

And Yes, a passion to help those in need.

Accepted with pre-approval for Mendoza! ACT: 31 GPA: 3.89. All AP/honor student with a long list of extracurriculars. I have two brothers connected to ND (one is a double domer and one is a current senior)

@ornament12 I see you Matt

Accepted!
ACT: 33
Weighted GPA: 4.133
200+ hours of service
Captain of track and cross country teams for two years, state medallist
Very involved in clubs (both school and non-school related)
Ethnic minority (Asian, Hispanic, Native Hawaiian)

@Turk71 What type of service did you do?

@Turk71 Well your test score is a definite outlier, based on the responses on this thread. I can draw only a few conclusions: 1. Your essays must have been exemplary. 2. Your GPA mitigated your low score (some people, after all, are just not great standardized test-takers.) 3. There is some interesting and/or unusual aspect to your ECs or leadership that is not being mentioned. 4. A huge gust of wind blew in and co-mingled your application with the “accepted” pile. At any rate, congratulations on your acceptance. Go Irish!

Must be the wind! Thanks
