Notre Dame SAT Scores?

How come on the University of Notre Dame website, under “admissions statistics” it states that its average SAT score is 1400-1530? That score is low compared to the SAT scores I have been hearing about…according to many websites, such as The College Board, the average Notre Dame SAT scores are 2000+. Im confused? Does anyone know why this might be?

Heres the link:

I’m guessing they’re excluding the writing section and counting only Math and CR.

Like the previous post stated, those scores are only including math and critical reading.

I called the admissions office this morning and they told me that this was actually the whole SAT, meaning, writing plus reading plus math. Also, the admissions office told me their average SAT was 1460…

You can look up the ND stats anywhere and there is nothing to suggest that the average ND applicant, acceptee or matriculant has an average SAT section score of less than 500. You know this is true. What’s your point here? Why even ask? Contrary to what you may have heard, there are some stupid questions. The ACT is 32-34 but the SAT is at the ACT equivalent of 20? Really? This is your question? So the trick is to submit the SAT, right? You’ll look like a wizard! Please.

http://blog.prepscholar.com/which-colleges-dont-require-sat-writing-complete-list This isn’t from ND’s mouth, but I think it’s some evidence to the contrary of what you were told by the person you called. Honestly, I think this is to say ND doesn’t care about the writing section of the SAT. I think this makes sense in the global picture of admissions at a pretty competitive college. Does this resonate with you?

Doubtful is right, the scale is clearly out of 1600

Notre Dame does not consider the W component. Trust me on this. I have two kids currently attending.

@doubtful my point is, the information on the website doesn’t match up to the information held by other websites not affiliated w/ the college. I LITERALLY called an admissions counselor and she told me that they do look at the writing, but they do not care about the essay score. I was just confused bc. my highest scoring section is in fact the writing section, and many colleges do not take that. Why even ask? For clarification. Like I said, I called the admissions and that is what they told me. So i was further wondering why some students with high SAT scores do not get in…I was confused and it would haven been stupid for me to ignore that. If they are looking at only the math and reading, I would have (math:650+reading:650), a score of 1300, discluding writing, which was my highest score (730). Therefore I shouldn’t even bother if they look at only math and reading?

@origionalposter the website states “stats for incoming 2015 freshman” though… the SAT is out of 2400

@pineapple223 I understand your point of view. When I originally viewed that page, I also thought it was referring to 3 part score. However, I can assure you that it’s 2-part that is shown on their website.

As far as to whether you should bother applying or not, that’s up to you. Yes, 1300 is lower than average, but maybe you get in. Who knows.

Best of luck!

I attended an in-person presentation by a ND regional rep tonight. ND ONLY cares about critical reading and writing. 1480 and above was middle 50%. Also: 39% of admitted applicants were in the top 1% of their graduating class; 90% in top 10%. Grades matter. Essays matter. Scores matter.

“Mid 50 percent” Meaning, there are students that get accepted with lower SAT scores…?

I think higheredmom meant to say “upper 50%”. Saying all scores above 1480 were only the mid 50% doesn’t make much sense.

I think @higheredmom meant to say ND only cares about CR+M. The middle 50% for enrolled students in this freshman class (college class of '19) is 1400-1530 CR+M. I don’t really see how anything could be misleading. Yes, on their CDS they do publish a middle 50 for the writing component but that is only for reporting purposes. When you spoke to the Admissions office, what they perhaps meant was that while they do “see” the writing score, it is not “considered” in terms of admission. If you are thinking of applying, your energy would be better spent trying to make your application shine in ways that could possibly overcome sub-par scores. Yes, 25% of the enrolled students have scores below the middle 50, but the majority of those are hooked in some way. If that applies to you, then your scores won’t be as much of a hindrance. If you are thinking of applying, apply. I have seen applicants with lower scores get in and higher scores denied. They really do look at the whole application.

Yes! sorry for the confusion! The rep ALSO said that for 2017s, ND Admissions would “like” to see BOTH current and new SAT scores (and ACT of course). She added that they are planning to have 40 current ND students take the new SAT to get an idea of what they should expect to see in the 2017 applicant pool. But, clearly, they don’t have enough confidence in the new SAT – and while she also said they could not “require” 2017 applicants to take both – and acknowledged most won’t take both current and new tests , or are focused on ACT alone, that is what they would like to see. She also called the new SAT a “money maker.”

Oh okay I got it! Thank you everyone for clarifying! Im hoping for the best!
