In response to the declining number of teenagers who read books for pleasure, writer Frank Bruni wrote “Read, Kids, Read” in order to provoke this generation of teenagers to read more. He presents a solid argument to convince his readers that the act of reading should remain as an important hobby and does so skillfully by the use of different types of data and presentation of opposing viewpoints.
Bruni makes an extensive use of data to persuade his audience. At first, he presents comparative data showing the decline of teenagers who read for pleasure. The mere fact that the percentage of seventeen-year-olds who consider reading as a hobby has decreased from “31 percent” to “20 percent” shows the readers that there is, in fact, a problem; this serves as the foundation on which Bruni builds an argument.
