I am deciding between UW-Madison and George Washington University.
Which one would you choose for econ major? (I wouldn't worry about $ now because GWU is giving me $44700.00 in aid)
I live in IL and like urban setting at DC with its networks. But UW is way higher in ranking... I am planning on Law School later. Which school should be better choice for me?

sorry i cant answer you question but HOW DID YOU GET THAT MUCH MONEY?? I wanna know coz i'll be transferring next fall.

ranking shouldnt mean much...GW should be better for econ/pre-law.
i hear madison has a lot of alcohol on campus... and i hear GW doesnt have a campus...

Go to GWU. You'll be much better off there for heading to law school. Nothing beats DC and all of the prelaw oppertunities there will be there. I would grab GWU and never look back at UW-M if GWU is going to give you that much money. That is awesome! And also, totally disregard the rankings. As said before, they don't mean much (if anything at all).

caa5042, I don't know how I got this much money. I think it's mainly the amount of tax imcome filed and EFC stuffs, you know!!!. My father has opened a new office for his business and the expense was huge. I think that maily caused this to happen, but I am not sure of any details.

Also, thanks all for your ideas on GWU and UW...

is most of it grant and scholarhip money?

Here is the detail...

Estimated Federal Pell Grant $1900.00
Federal Suppliemental Grant $2000.00
GW Guaranteed Grant $16000.00
University and Alumni Award $15000.00
Federal Work Study Prog. $2500
Fed. Sub Stafford Loan Refer.$5500.00
Federal Perkins Loan $1800.00
Total Award $44700.00
Above is a total award for one year with on-campus housing.

 Did you apply for any of them? Or did you receive them automatically?

And also- do you mind posting your stats? college+high school.

You get it automatically. Of course they decide what to give you.
Also, my stats are not that impressive.
I am a junior transfer student with 3.3 GPA from a community college.
High school stat is even worse- 2.8GPA
And that is about all they used to judge me.

the tution at GW is still 38k a year, so that financial aid package is not that impressive, they just met your EFC......and what you needed.

with 11k for on campus housing (approx) and 38k tution, your already looking at 49k a year, so thats still over what they are giving you..but i assume your parents will be able to meet the rest of the need.

I was going to major in econ, so I looked at some rankings and Madison is in the top 10, whereas GWU... well, GWU possesses no specific academic strengths that I am aware of.
Meh, I would go where the money is at.

Indeed.

Oh, and they do not have a campus!

I am also aware of Wisconsin's ranking for Econ major. And that is one of the reasons why I still can't decide. At the same time Wisconsin is known for its big party scene and not a lot of people seems to know UW-M very well.
I am planning to go to Law School and I think it's time for me to focus on studying.

Uhh... If UW-M has a party scene, GWU has it worse. In fact, the GWU party-scene is so good that Georgetown students tend to go there as well.

About what i got at USC. Take the money

What planet have you been on? GWU has one of the top IR programs as well as a strong PolSci department. Those sound like academic strengths to me.

Sunda, I really think that GWU would look FAR better on a law school app than UW-M. As you pointed out, UM-W has a HUGE party scene and is so regarded as a large party school. I know a girl who went to UW-M, and well, let's just say she was never heard from again (probably still stuck in a barrel of beer somewhere).

In the end the decision is ultimately up to you. There are also other factors that you should be considering, such as quality of life, distance from home (you might not think of this as a factor now, but after you go to college, it will be one), etc. Best of luck in your decision!

Good for GW.

Too bad... sunada wants to do economics.

You have no idea how law schools examine undergraduate institutions. How do you substantiate this claim?

I know somebody who's transferring out of GW cause the econ department isn't strong enough. btw i go there and am an IR person, social life is good and people don't mind not having a campus (although I do).
