Just observing trends some trends of the UC rankings it seems that UCSD has primarily surpassed UCLA in a lot of fields. How long do you think it will take before we break out of our 35th mold and surpass UCLA?

Undergraduate and Graduate rankings are nowhere near the same. Undergraduate rankings are too far skewed due to national reputation, endowment, competitiveness of applications, sports, etc. This is why you see schools with monstrous research (i.e., UCSD, Wisconsin, UIUC, Indiana, etc.) ranking high in a bevy of graduate rankings, but go unnoticed when USN publishes their annual ranking. Until UCSD can generate enough interest in its undergraduate population to propel itself upwards, it’ll be stagnant in the #35 position for a while.

Keep in mind that UCSD has only been around for 50 years. The school currently has multiple construction projects to build tier 1 research facilities and strives to offer new incentives for incoming profs/researchers. I’d say give it another 25 years, and it is likely that UCSD will surpass many high ranked institutions, including, but not limited to UCLA.

I agree with wintersnow. In 25 years UCSD will have a lot more facilities etc, and ucla doesn’t have anywhere to expand like UCSD. Undergrad is where it’s at for me, and I still wanna see a ucsd football team kill other schools football teams
