To certain extent, UCSD has already achieved that and surpassed UCLA -- see: UCSD --> http://www.jacobsschool.ucsd.edu/news_events/releases/release.sfe?id=533 and UCLA --> http://www.engineer.ucla.edu/news/2006/US%20News%20Graduate%20Rankings.html

Well, Berkeley is surrounded by, well, berkeley, irvine is surrounded by...irvine, and ucla is surrounded by westwood - none of which are crappy areas.

I've repeatedly heard the argument that academically, UCSD is right on part with LA, and in quite a few programs, on par or higher than Berkeley (bioengineering, neuroscience, etc come to mind). However, since LA has all the D1 sports teams, they get much more national recognition.

i think its possible, but if it does happen, it'll take a while. I think in the US news overall rankings for undergraduate schools (which most of the people use to gauge colleges) UCSD was 42 or so 2 years ago, and now it's 32. I might be off on those numbers. So it could happen, but I think it'll take a while.

yeah. i predict a massive earthquake in the bay area. berkeley will be at the bottom of the bay. as for ucla...do you know how many carcinogens are in the smog?!?!? it'll be a bioharzard to live there

^cracked me up...

If it ever decides to go Division I then I think thats its very probable. as many others have said, its academics are right on par, if not better than UCLA, and some are as good as berkeley. Also it has its new RADY school of management, that could bring its business rankings up. hopefully it does go up, cuz ill be there for the next 4+ years
