Nrotc

Does anyone have any information about the NROTC unit there, specifically Marine Option.

I'm a 3/C Mid at vandy and can answer most questions you have. I am navy option but we are a pretty tight unit and I was involved in Semper Fi (MO training) first semester so what is on your mind?

How many in the Vandy unit? How often do you have to wear your uniform?

About 80 midshipmen including Marine options and Nurses, a couple enlisted marines going to Vanderbilt or some of the other cross town schools, and a staff of 7 officers and our gunny. We wear uniforms on thursdays all day until after lab which is actually pretty fun because you get a lot of attention and it is real positive at Vandy. There are a lot of opportunities throughout the week to do physical training or volunteering that might require wearing a uniform but thats minor. my class has about 22 midshipmen and I think most of them will be committing to the program after the summer. We all know each other real well and after a few weeks in the Unit you get to know everybody.

Are there a lot of out of state members who stay at dorms or in apartments? I live in Utah and will be in the NROTC unit here, but am looking to transfer to a different school after my first or 2nd year. Any advice?

almost all of our unit is made up of out of state students from all over the place. Vanderbilt is going to be 100% residential in the next couple years so by the time you get here expect to be living in dorms, suites, and apartments on campus. Transfer students usually have no trouble fitting in at vandy, and if you transfer into our Unit, either as a first time NROTC mid who just got a scholarship or someone from another program, everyone is very nice and accepting.

Is transfering from the University of Utah going to be difficult?

transfering with a scholarship will probably involve going through the national nrotc offices and stuff with lots of help from your unit at utah but Im sure it is possible. Vanderbilt NROTC has a set amount of scholarships it can give out so transfering is not the easiest thing but there are plenty of people that will help you. Without a scholarship, transfering shouldnt be too difficult, and no matter what, it should be a simple transition from unit to unit since the curriculums and protocols are very similar across the map.

Does Vandy have a NROTC webite?

Yeah it is pretty crummy right now though. A couple midshipmen are working on making a student site but if you go to http://www.vanderbilt.edu/nrotc/vunrotc.html you can get a nice overview of the program. Also if you want to set up a meeting with our officers they are around all summer and would field calls with questions any time. Any more questions and ask away
