NSLI-Y 2014-2015 (2012-2013 are welcome to put their input )

Nope, I did not know there was one lol. But I just requested to join it. Do you know any Turkish?

Nooo, I don’t know any. Do you? And are you a senior? There’s only one guy going to Bursa that I know of so far… the rest are all girls.

I am beginning to learn it now, but I have no previous knowledge of it at all.
And yes, I am a Senior (and a guy lol). I guess girls are just more attracted to this kind of a thing.

I know that no one has posted here for awhile. If anyone who is going to Korea this summer reads this can you please let me know what the dates of your trip are? The reason I am asking is that my son will be applying this fall for next summer, but his high school has a rather early start date. I am wondering if he does NSLI-Y Korean summer if he would be back in time for the start of school? I figured we might was well know in advance if this is going to be an issue. Thanks in advance - and for everyone who got the scholarships this year have fun!

@mominaz Not NSLIY-Korea, but the dates completely depend on which organization is implementing the program. For instance, I went on Summer China this year through UDEL which had different dates from the groups that went with American Councils. Typically I would say that the latest a summer trip would get back is mid August (around 20th). Every year, the dates could also change as well with addition of trips or changes in itinerary for each trip. Don’t worry about missing school, most schools are very nice about it especially since the most he would miss would be a week. On my trip, we had a girl who missed the first week of her school, and her school is completely fine with it since classes are typically not launched straight into their material in the first week or so. My advice: don’t worry about the dates/missing school. If you don’t even apply, you don’t know what could have been, so apply and when you get accepted, then look at the dates and decide (with the school) whether it is okay for him to go. Good luck!

Thanks for your advice makearight. I do agree that he should go ahead and apply and then deal with the dates later. I believe that the school would understand since he would be on an academic program learning a critical language (not on an extended family vacation lol). Plus the first week of school so many students are dropping and adding and whatnot that the real instruction doesn’t get underway for a bit.

It’s a bit early, but is there anyone out there looking to apply for 2015-2016? I’m going to apply for 1. Turkish Year 2. Arabic Year 3. Chinese Year

@mominaz, this past summer’s dates to Korea was June 24, returning Aug 9. Heard there were different age students that went and one student had to return after 2 weeks due to extreme homesickness. Just out of middle school so had a hard time. Most of the kids enjoyed it. Haven’t seen signs yet of reverse culture shock.

2014-2015 application is officially out! Anyone planning on applying for the South Korea Summer program? Also, any advice, alumni of NSLI-Y?

D participated in NSLI-Y this summer. Her advice when applying: Be yourself, not “what do they want to hear?”.

Good advice for any summer program and for college applications.

(Alumna of arabic summer)
My main piece of advice is try your hardest to show/explain WHY you’re so excited about the program, whatever the reasons are. If you can clearly articulate that, you’re in a good place.

Hey everyone! What language and duration are you applying for? I am applying for Korean Year. Just wanted to wish everyone good luck!

Hi!! I applied for the summer Arabic program, with the second choice being Turkish. This is my first year applying, and I am a junior.
