<p>Hey guys! I'm setting up this thread for people to talk bout the 2012-2013 NSLI-Y program. Here is the place to talk about where you want to go abroad, for how long, etc. Also if you've already been please spread light on what it's like, where you went, etc.</p>
<p>I was wondering what programs are you going to try for? Also if you have gone, where did you go and what was your experience like?</p>
<p>I'm currently a sophomore and would be going my Junior year. I'm studying chinese at my school and in my second year but, my ability is that of someone whose studied like a month. :( Hopefully I'd inprove in China. I haven't gone abroad before but I hope to study Chinese or Arabic.(or any or the others cause they all seem fantastic!) I would like to go for the yearlong session but I might only be able to go for a Summer. Either way it's bound to be fun!</p>
<p>For those of you who don't know, NSLI-Y is the National Security Initiative for Youth, a high school foreign exchange, or study abroad program that sponsors students to learn critical languages. They have Summer and Yearlong programs with languages like Chinese, Arabic, Persian, Russian and I think Korean.</p>
<p>Hey!I’m also a Sophmore right now and this is my first time applying.
I’ll be applying for the Summer program and my first option is Turkish and my second option is Arabic. </p>
<p>I am a senior right now. I really want to get into NSLI-Y India summer. Do you think that I will have a better chance since this is my last chance to apply? I am also currently a permanent resident but I will have my citizenship by summer of 2012. Am I still eligible?</p>
<p>Actually, I do not know any Turkish at all but Turkey has a big role to play in the future and learning Turkish will be very beneficial.
And btw, if I do get accepted…this will be my first time studying abroad too…so it will be awesome! :)</p>
<p>I’m not sure what the residence requirements are, that would probably be something that you have to email them about for case by case resolution with them. I don’t <em>think</em> they they specifically choose higher aged people but maybe there would be more older kids cause they have more experience in different areas and have matured more. I know the last time I applied I was doing it for a COMPLETELY different set of reasons and on different terms. Now I feel like I would gain alot more out of the xperience than I would have before.</p>
<p>Good luck to you guys! Just an FYI, NSLI-Y really doesn’t discriminate against age. They look for maturity in a student so that if his/her mummy and daddy aren’t around, the kid wouldn’t suddenly break down and do something stupid. I got in as a freshman for the Korea semester program :)</p>

<p>I love to learn languages more than any other subject. I have done 2 years of Spanish and 2 years (this year is my second) of Chinese in school. I also have self studied Russian, Greek, Korean, and Norwegian.</p>
<p>I’m applying to go to Korea for first and second choice (first being academic year, second being summer). I would REALLY love to go to Korea for a whole year, but it may cause problems with my school and my graduation. Even if I were to just geti n for the summer though, it would be nice as well.</p>
<p>Third choice is to go to any time block of China. I’d prefer a year, but I’ll go with whatever I get.</p>
<p>I’m applying for the Korea summer and year program. I’m still not sure if a year would be best. Still checking to see how it would work with my school… O____O;;;</p>

I tried this program last year but it was really a pathetic effort on my part (last minute, missing the deadline, no parent statement… X___X) mostly cuz i didnt actually think id get it and that it would work for my schedule…
This year its different… Im like 85% sure im doing gap year and this is what i wanna do… So 300% effort this time!!
I REALLY wanna do Korean but Chinese would would be fun too!!
Does anyone know if year long programs are more competitive and how many ppl usually get it??

<p>Do any of you guys know how safe the program is? I Have taken a year’s worth of Arabic and really want to study Arabic abroad, but my parents are afraid for my safety -_____-</p>
<p>I’m considering applying as well, but I’m really only interested in the Arabic in Morocco Summer Program. Are you allowed to be that specific and will they honor your requests?</p>
<p>I think you apply for Arabic, and then they place you in a program. I am also very interested in the Morocco program, but I have Korea and Turkey as my other preferences.</p>
