NSLI-Y 2017 - 2018

I’m seeing that a lot of people got into NSLIY after reapplying. Do a lot of people get in their first time applying? I’m trying to be hopeful but not too hopeful! :wink:

Anybody else put Turkish as their first?

@astonishinggg Don’t stress yourself out! On my program there were plenty of people that made it during their first time applying. I would say that most people get in after a year or two of applying simply because they have more experience with the process (writing essays and the interview) and they are also older (older applicants are the majority of those accepted) like juniors and seniors.

Hi everyone! I’m a freshman who applied for Korean summer as my first choice and Chinese summer as my second. I’m a semi-finalist as well! I never thought I would get in, but I’m happy to be with everyone!

Is it too late to apply for the 2017 summer NSLI-Y program?
@EmmaPotts

@CIRCUITDEBATER Unfortunately, the application deadline for 2017 Summer and 2017-18 Year was late October 2016. Notifications for semifinalists were sent out last week. Other abroad programs deadlines for next year may still be viable options. When in doubt, googling the program is your best friend. Good luck.

What programs are similar/identical to NSLI-Y?

@CIRCUITDEBATER I’d recommend looking back a couple pages through this thread, several people have posted information on alternate language scholarships that you might find helpful.

@CIRCUITDEBATER I believe CBYX is still open depending on your location (but not for long) and EXCEL is still open. Those however are year long programs not for the summer.

@CIRCUITDEBATER
There are no programs identical to NSLI-Y as it’s unique in what it does and the programs it offers. If you’re looking for similar programs though I can suggest:

  1. YES abroad- Offers American high school students and recent graduates full scholarships to study for one academic year in countries with significant Muslim populations. Full scholarship. (Deadline: closed)
  2. CBYX- Study abroad for a year in Germany. Full Scholarship. (Deadline: still open, but varies state to state)
  3. SYA- Study abroad in China, France, Italy, or Spain for an academic year. Awards some financial aid, but not a full scholarship. (Deadline: February 15, 2017)
    4.CIEE- Study abroad, full year, or summer in 45 different countries. Awards partial financial aid. (Deadline: always open?)
  4. AFS-USA - A year or semester program to Costa Rica or Argentina. AFS Covers half the tuition cost. Other AFS programs offer full scholarships, such as Japan. (Deadline: varies)

Good luck!

@desa33 @CIRCUITDEBATER I did CIEE High School Summer Abroad last summer and they gave me close to a full scholarship and I really enjoyed the program. I also heard it’s pretty east to get into if you are not doing Spanish programs.

Semi-finalist for Tajiki and Turkish summer!

Does anyone know how likely it is for a semi-finalist to be rejected as a finalist?

Congrats @hotchkiss50! I don’t think the number of semi-finalist are revealed for any given year. But I thought I read somewhere (not sure if it was a cc board or elsewhere) that the number of semi-finalist from years past was around 1500 and from that, 600 finalist are chosen. It’s all hearsay as I have not been able to confirm any numbers…but wanted to pass on the numbers we are working with in our head anyway.

A past NSLI-Y Scholar told me about half of applicants are chosen as semifinalists, and 1/6 are chosen as finalists. This might vary by program/language, however.

To the person who made the Russian summer group chat, how does one get added into that? I just found this forum and would love to talk to other semifinalists for Russian!

@oralsurgery01 I was looking on the CIEE website and am a little confused on how to start. If you don’t mind, could you tell me a little more about your experience. Like what program did you do, how was the application process, how much did you have to pay yourself, and etc.

@desa33 I applied shortly after I got rejected form NSLI-Y last so about this time. I applied for the High school Arabic language and culture summer program. To me I thought the application was a lot easier than the NSLI-Y, it only took me a few days to finish the whole application. I also applied for the Global Navigator scholarship that is associated with the Arabic program and I received a little bit more than $5000 which covered a big portion. It’s bases on merit and financial need so it varies person to person, but most of the people in my program received full and almost full scholarships. All in all, I thought the application was pretty easy and straightforward once you get started and the program was a lot of fun. Let me know if you have any more questions.

The Turkish program has been suspended again… :frowning:

@snowfinch whaaat? how are you so sure?
