NSLI-Y 2017 - 2018

I’m thinking about applying. Does anyone know how colleges view this program?

@Berrycupcake colleges think very highly of this program (as well as others). You would be able to prove to colleges that you have a high level of maturity and independence, among other things. But if you’d only be applying for NSLI-Y for the resume builder, there are much easier things you can do.

@Berrycupcake Like what @Fangirl1999 said, NSLI-Y is viewed as a very competitive program by colleges (and estimates of the acceptance rates put it at around 15-20% accepted). But if this is your sole motivation for applying to NSLI-Y, completing the application (and the interview if you get that far) may be very difficult to complete and may not be worth it.

Hi guys! I’m applying for the Russian summer program but haven’t really settled on a second choice- leaning towards summer Chinese
Have any of you started the essays yet?

I’ve actually finished my essays for awhile now. If anyone actually wants to swap essays for reading I’d love to do so~

I really wanted to do this program but I’m not a U.S Citizen nor a permanent resident (just a legal resident). Really wanted to try the Korean or Chinese program.

Congratulations to everyone here for finding the NSLIY program - it really is an incredible opportunity! My Daughter attended the China summer program (this summer) and had the most incredible experience. You can read all about it on Onthefourthwall.com - her travel blog. You can also contact her through this site if you have specific questions. I remember the waiting and the application nerves all too well. I remember my daughter’s application essays showed a real interest in learning about the language and that the hard work of learning Mandarin was a welcome challenge. She gave sincere reasons for applying, for choosing the selected language and promised that her learning wouldn’t stop when the program ended. She was a sophomore, had no prior experience and it was her first time applying. She is now thinking about a gap year!

Hey, guys I’m a junior and is interested in the Chinese summer program. I haven’t started on the applications yet (procrastination) and this is the first time I’m applying. I’m kinda nervous and hope we can all make it through the application process!

I hope their are more Arabic participants/appliers who come on here haha! Are any past participants willing to post their application statistics (activities, awards, grades, etc.)?

It is already that exciting time of year again! haha Hey Everyone, my name is Emma and I am a Korean Summer alum from this past summer of 2016. When I applied last year, college confidential was my favorite thing because I made a lot of friends and even went to my interview knowing some faces already! If you guys have any questions about Korea summer or Nsli-y in general feel free to private message me or just leave your questions on this thread and I will try to keep an eye out and answer to the best of my ability! I think a great way to make friends is finding nsli-y friends in your state so if you have not done so already, I recommend everyone introducing themselves with their language preference, grade in school, home state, and the reason why you applied or how you came across Nsli-y.

To anyone interested: YES Abroad applications are now open!

Hi! I am a junior and I would love to apply to Morocco to learn Arabic. Any tips?

@janekinsella same, but i’m currently a sophomore. I studied abroad in Morocco last summer with CIEE and it was amazing. I saw the NSLI-Y kids while I was there now I really want to get into NSLIY

Hello, I’m gonna be applying next year. I’m a sophomore in high school right now. I’m just gonna follow along with the thread. So I’ll be lurking (:

Does anyone have any tips when applying for Russian? I applied last year but didn’t even make it to semi-finals.

@gmwilson There really aren’t any specific qualities that will help you get into one language program and not another. As long as you show your passion for the language and your personality shines through your writing, you are golden. People make NSlI-Y regardless of their language skills so the only way they can truly see how you will take the opportunity, is to be able to judge you on how your passion reads on paper.

This is my 3rd time applying and I haven’t made it to the semi-finals. I’m starting to get discouraged and quite frustrated at myself. But 3rd time’s the charm I hope. Good luck to everyone who is applying for the second, third, or even fourth time! Don’t give up

Hey! My name’s Emma and this is my first time applying. I’m applying for Arabic summer and as my second choice Russian summer. Sadly because of the program I’m in at my school I can’t apply for the academic year. I’m really excited! Has anyone done either of these before?

I have a friend whose in thailand for the YES program and shes loving it
they went to a party at the ambassadors house and he personally complimented her speech! @-)

My daughter, a junior, is about to submit her application for Russian summer. She has three teen brothers who were recently adopted from eastern (Russian-speaking) Ukraine, and has spent time in Ukraine herself, so she’s already pretty familiar with the culture. Although she has had plenty of exposure to the Russian language, she hasn’t had any formal training. She’s really excited about this opportunity with NSLI-Y!

Good luck to you all. This seems to be a fantastic program.
