@citytraveler27 I had to tie into sound via my cell phone while I watched the video on the computer.
Hey everyone! I went to Chengdu this past summer with NSLI-Y, so if anyone has any questions, or wants me to edit their essays, I would be happy to do so,
Anyone out there do the Russian summer program? What factors do you think played the biggest part in your getting accepted?
My sophomore daughter is applying this year. Application is about 80% complete.
Hey guys, I am an alumna of Korea Summer 2016! If you have any questions feel free to pm me or email me at emmap@oakstreetadvisors.com
Also, everyone should join the FB Page! NSLIY Applicants 2012-2013 (anyone can join we just can not change the name because of how many members it has) The forum will not let me link it but if you need the link, just contact me.
I blogged about my experience in Seoul, so if anyone is interested in knowing what the program was like, I would recommend to give it a little read: endeavorswithemma.wordpress .com
@Dancingmom518 I think that the biggest factors in your acceptance are your essays. NSLI-Y really wants to see that you are someone with a passion for learning languages and that can easily adapt to new and challenging situations.
Thank you, @houndlover. That’s very helpful to know.
I hope so! To be honest I’m banking on my essays. I don’t have a lot of super impressive ECs or an extremely high GPA or anything like that
We are running out of time - yikes. My D also has a sports tourney the same week this is due, and some theater stuff is very demanding all of a sudden. Can anyone recommend, like, the best handful of videos or tips or sites that’s helped them in their application? I’m getting a bit stressed. I would be so grateful!
Alumni, does anyone know if they prefer more formal essays or more intimate, personalized essays? I feel like I’m caught in limbo between the two.
Hi y’all. I’m applying for Arabic summer with my second choice being Any. I was wondering if anyone had any advice or if I should put any as my second?
Hi, everyone! I’m a 2017 Korean Summer alum, and I’ve posted some resources for applicants on my blog (www.theculturelens.com).
For an overview of the program and acceptance rates: http://www.theculturelens.com/nsli-y/nsli-y-101/
For application advice (esp. for essays!) : http://www.theculturelens.com/nsli-y/nsliy-201-application-advice/
I’ve also compiled a directory of NSLI-Y alums willing to help with essays: http://www.theculturelens.com/nsli-y/essay-help-directory/
With less than two weeks until the application deadline, this is a bit late, but I hope it is nevertheless helpful!
@davidyekwonkim I know that for the Korean summer program, any students above the beginner level go to Seoul, as only beginner classes are offered in Songdo and Jeonju (the other two possible Korean cities for the summer program).
@gmwilson funding for NSLI-Y was secured for the 2018-19 programs
I know everyone is stressed getting their applications out. If you want to be inspired read onthefourthwall.com -this blog was written by Ana who was in Xi’an for the summer of 2016. All the ups and downs of a summer abroad and the realities of language immersion. You’ll be inspired to finish those applications!
Deadline is coming up fast. Good luck, everyone…
I’m second-guessing my daughter’s pick for her recommendation letter: It’s a teacher she just got to know this year, but she loves the woman and feels she has turned her around in the subject. The teacher agreed happily to writing the letter. Do you think this is a deal-breaker, considering they advise picking someone who’s known the student for, like, two years?
@Gatormama I asked a teacher I only had for a couple months when I applied last year, and I made it to semifinalists, so I don’t think it matters much as long as the teacher is able to write a strong rec
Thanks so much for easing my fear!
