I’m sorry about that, you should definitely apply next year. I was thinking the same thing because getting rejected at finalist stage is rough. Now, I in the back of my mind am hoping I make it while also assuming not and plan to make other summer plans. I wish finalist notifications came out sooner.
Thank you, Sarah. It will take her a bit of time to get over the “rejection”. Thankfully, she will have future opportunities to apply.
Best of luck to all the semi-finalists.
Hey is there any group chat besides this thread (discord text group etc.) that I could join? I got my summer 2023 Korean semi finalist notification a bit ago and I have been trying to find a way to interact with more applicants.
Hey! Congrats on semis, that’s amazing news, and I wish you best of luck in the finals. I am pretty sure there is a discord but I don’t know the link. I would definitely check the two NSLI-Y applicant facebook groups, those are often really active (I think if you just search NSLI-Y applicant on facebook you should be able to find them.) You could probably also find the discord through the FB groups as well as any other groupchats (I know that oftentimes people will organize Instagram groupchats by language).
I didnt get it either. Had applied for hindi. Best of luck guys, especially those who moving forward. Please do share your experiences later wuth all
I’m a Chinese academic year semifinalist - anyone received an interview request yet?
Hey, do you have any advice for the interview process? I’m not sure how it really works and would love to learn more…any questions you think they may ask?
Hey! PM me and I’ll send info
My son hasn’t received an interview request yet. It looks like from FB that some others have interviews scheduled already and I know we have until February 1st but we’re anxiously waiting in this household!
I learned a couple things from some of the volunteers under NSLI that came for the year program in America from countries abroad, so I’ll share them here(I’m a Korean summer 2023 semifinalist):
-The full academic year program is a lot more flexible than the summer program, and people may leave on different days and on different flights. The summer program is a lot more structured, and everyone going to the same country leaves the same day on the same flight, unless a host family is not found in time for certain people. That’s quite rare for the summer program, so don’t worry about the host family situation if you’re in that program.
- if you can, get to know the people who are going to the same country as you under the same program, so you have someone to talk and communicate with while you are there, and get people’s phone numbers and socials to contact each other
-cliche advice, but don’t stress while being interviewed. Relax, and try to give concise answers. My interviewer was a young lady who was an alumni during the first year the program was created, and we had a lovely conversation. - if you become a finalist, make sure to research into the niche things about where you are going, for example Korea is known for having hard water so filters for your shower and sink will be practically essential to prevent hair shedding and skin breakouts. Also wall adapters will be needed for electronics since voltage in other countries is different than in the US
Good luck to all the applicants!
I was accepted to the Tajikistan 2023 program as a alternate. How likely will it be that I will be accepted later?
Have anybody else gotten notification? I’m waiting for the Mandarin or Korean program.
Hindi rolled out acceptances but not the other languages. Still waiting!
Waiting for Mandarin summer notification. Any sense of when we will hear the results?
How do you know that Hindi is out? And how many did you hear of being chosen for Hindi? I’m hoping more will come out Sometimes they trickle out.
Thanks!
Got finalist notif for Indonesia on Monday!
I believe yesterday (March 9th, 2023) FLEX Abroad announcements for Alternates went out. Not sure if the finalist announcements are out yet for FLEX, but I’m so excited! Now waiting for Korean AY.
From other threads, I’ve gathered that (for NSLI-Y) Chinese announcements are typically released during the second week of April on average. Korean and Russian programs are supposed to be after that since they’re typically the last programs to be announced. YES Abroad announcements should be released around this time since it’s usually the second week of March.
Good luck to all of you guys!!
Flex finalists were released yesterday. The next NSLI-Y notifications should be Arabic or Mandarin next week if it follows last year’s schedule, but since initial notifs came out early, they may come out early as well.
Hi everyone! I was just wondering if anyone knew where NISLy sends people…? I mean is it a major city area or more of a rural village or is it suburban? Another thing - does everyone that goes to the same country get sent to the same location? I’m just curious!
NSLI-Y sends finalists to larger cities. In South Korea, I believe all AY students take classes in Seoul. All participants live in or near the large city in which they are placed.
