That would give the students who applied for India a week same for Russian students. I think they will be pretty strict about it considering the long visa process.

For Russia I mean

Hi, I was wondering if a few of you could do what I did and see what it says - it probably is nothing. I went to the AFS site https://usa.afsglobal.org and to the AFS online app and then forgot user i.d./password, send to email option and put in the email I used for the NSLI app. Then they sent me a password token and user name which was the first letter and last name of my student whereupon I reset the password (which I had never set in the first place since I had never been on the AFS site) and so my son does have some kind of profile there, but there is not a country assigned as of yet, but it does have a state dept seal where his personal log in info is with a case number or something. I was wondering if those of you who were accepted (or not, or still waiting) had tons of time and maybe wanted to spend a few minutes there to see what it does for you… I did mention in earlier posts that I had two students, one is a step-daughter who is not as… traveled as the other and very shy and has low self esteem, who may not have performed as confidently during the interview; so what? well I used the same email for both students when I applied but there was only one i.d. that came back with a password token… this is for those of you who have nothing else to do… and it will help curb the waiting game. Me, I am bushed and am off to bed yawn sorry for cluttering up the forum…

Well, if that were to be an accurate way to check, then I wouldn’t have made it in because neither my mother’s nor my own email works. However, there’s no reason to give up hope yet. If you are going to be devastated after going on the website, just patiently wait. If not, go ahead and try your luck on it. I’m a bit curious to see other people’s results.

oh I would feel awful if that were true!! my son did go to three startalk camps - 2 run by BYU and one run by Concordia and I use the same email address for everything so it’s possible that AFS has it from one of those three scenarios.

Im thinking that they are wrapping-up the summer programs first and then the countries. what countries did you guys apply for? I applied for Russia, Turkey , and China.

we applied for summer programs, my son for arabic and my step-daughter for chinese - we only applied for one program each, I wish I had put more than once choice down though at least for my son oh well!

I applied for Korea as my first choice and then China as my second.

On the AFS website it didn’t say my e-mail was in the system…

Our system did not find any matching records for the e-mail address you provided. Please note that this option only works for customer accounts. Staff or Volunteer should contact the IT Department for assistance.

Goalpost, I just tried that and it worked for me. I got an email with my first initial and last name. I really hope that means I got in haha.

I tried to log in and it said Access Denied due to invalid access right. I might’ve made an account with AFS a few years ago that I don’t remember though.

I did the login on AFS, and it worked, but I went to “Application” and it says my #1 choice is China, #2 is Arabic, #3 is Russia, and #4 is Turkey. Now I’m REALLY worried because that is not what I applied for. I applied for Arabic and my #1 and Russia #2. I didn’t even write China down for one of my choices…

It’ll be really devastating if they made a mistake.

if you test your email address and you get a password reset notification, once you have set a password and logged in they show you one set of fields, and if you click on your name you can see a little more. For us, it showed the country as ‘N/A’ and then when I clicked his name it went to a NSLI for Youth page and showed his application status as being incomplete. So…who knows?! Obviously we are all semi-finalists. Well, at least it is entertaining (or frustrating) Sore Subject who was accepted - was not found, but I think there are different sponsoring organizations depending on where you’re going. Sorry if I caused any added anxieties.

This is going to be my last comment on this, I kind of feel like I’ve hijacked this site and I’m sorry - soresubject are you sure you didn’t try and log into the leader/volunteer site? Here is where you go to click the ‘forgot password’ and then they ask for your email address, I noticed that if you go to afs.org, it is for the leaders/volunteers and that is not the right one:
https://usa.afsglobal.org/Participant/OnlineApplication

okay, done!! good luck to all and hopefully by the end of this week!

Yeah it doesn’t seem to recognize my e-mail at all!

Hey guys,

I’m a little new to this particular forum, but I applied to NSLI-Y with my first choice as China and the second as Korea, anyway, I just wanted point out that not all of the programs are AFS… Some are sponsored through different organizations.

True that Madison (and welcome to a forum full of excited and sometimes eccentric nsli-y hopefuls). However, many languages and people are sponsored by AFS, so it’s worth a try if one is strong enough to bear the consequences (I feel so powerful and mysterious saying that). iEarn also does as well as universities among others…

I called today and the people at nsli-y said that they are still deciding, on china, and that they should be sending out emails on friday or earlier next week.

I applied for year and thats what they said but they said that the whole China program, summer and year, will probably be Friday or early next week, because there are so many more people they can take this year. they said they were still in the process of making decision :)

thanks for the update!

Has anyone heard anything about the political unrest in South Korea? There’s been a lot of press lately about a soldier getting shot and the South Korean sunken ship caused by a bomb from North Korea. My daughter is applying for the Korean program and I’m very concerned about the state of politics in the country.

Does anybody know if any Arabic people have heard back yet?
I applied for the summer program and still haven’t heard anything …
