number of units for pre-med

How many units do pre-med at UCLA typical take for a quarter? Thanks!

This is an essentially meaningless question. It really depends on how you want to structure your education and how quickly you want to graduate. Also, how hard you want to work each quarter.

Take your first quarter easy and ramp things up if you can handle more. Don't worry about the "pre-meds."

units arent really even a good gauge of anything. my chem 30BL class is 3 units and my physci 111a class is 6 units. i feel the workload and time required for 30BL is much much greater than 111a. from the unit numbers you would get the misconception that 30BL would be an "easy" or very low work/low intensity class. couldnt be farther from the truth.

I agree with you guys. I'm taking chem20L for this quarter and it's taking so much of my time than any of my other classes. Thank you guys for your input.

But what I really want is to get first-hand experience inputs from "pre-meds" at UCLA. I'd like to learn how they are balancing their academic course load, internship, work and volunteering, if not too much trouble.

ugh for chem20L
haha

uchem07,

You're going to get a million different stories. Some people handle things better than others. Just do what works for you.

i tend to take between 13 and 14 units most quarters so far. but it really depends on the classes you take. (ie, i took chem/physics/chem lab last quarter and it was pretty tough)

it also depends on how many GE's you transfered in (i transferred in almost all of mine so I didn't add the 5 unit chunk my first few quarters).

as for how it "looks", i've heard conflicting replies from the people i've talked to. Most people say that whatever you take, it looks best if you do well. Taking 19 units and getting a 3.0 looks MUCH worse than taking 13 and getting a 3.5.

In the end, most people agree that it's better to have a 3.6 and have taken it more slowly than to have a 3.1 and tried to cram your way to "success."

i took 15 last quarter and 21 this quarter...and i came in with sophmore standing

You're taking 21 units this quarter?? Wow that seems insane. What courses are you taking?
