Recommended amount of units per quarter(or semester)

How many units would med schools like to see you take per quarter (or semester).

I'm starting my freshman year this fall, and because of prereqs and course availability, i'll only be able to take 12 credits of "core" classes like chem, math, and social science.

I'm thinking of taking a random 4th class like Fluency in Technology to get 16 total units. Should i just take 12 units or do med schools consider that too low.

Depends on what's normal at your school. Less than normal is a problem.

Med schools are unlikely to really pay attention. Taking more is not going to earn you any extra favor. Even dropping below normal for a semester or two is not a problem if you make up those lost credits some other semester. Less than normal is problematic only when it's a repeated occurrence.

Bear in mind that my school didn't have "units", we just went by classes. Four was normal.

We have been warned very seriously that dropping from four to three ever was a pretty big deal, and that we were expected to go to five at least once or twice.

Now, of course, those are very large swings -- going from 16 to 12, or whatever the case may be. So who knows what 15 to 14 would do -- probably nothing. Etc.

So would 3 classes for a total of 12 units be okay for first semester of freshman year? Some people are taking 4 classes, whereas some others are taking 3 because older kids recommended taking 3 to slowly adjust to college life.

We don't know. Do whatever's normal at your school.
