I just got off the phone with someone from the admissions office.
She said that the number of people waitlisted is 200.
On a previous thread, I read it was 700 but this information is just like ... woah.

Oh damn...lucky lucky...probably half of us will get off the waitlist then maybe....prepare updates people :).

shhhh! that's a secret!

I really doubt that the WL is at 200. Maybe you talked to the cleaning lady in the admissions office.

oh well, not like I'm gonna do anything different now.

there's gotta be more than 200 . . .

Who sent something in?

why don't one of you people call and inquire for the number?

I called and they told me 700, but someone should call again to confirm.

i called and they said that they "don't disclose that information." However, my high school principal and my college advisor both said they would be very surprised if the number was as high as 700 for Harvard. On the other hand, the competitiveness of this year and the sheer size and strength of the applicant pool may have caused an increase in the waitlist size.

arghh and I got my meager hopes up...

as to why the adcom said 200, meredithv may be right.

Omg only 200?!?!?!? Yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

yeah I don't know how anyone got specific numbers, they just said several hundred.

well, the lady I talked to said: "about a couple of hundred"
me: "You mean like 200, as in 2-0-0? Wow!!!"
lady: "yes"
me: "Wow, so just a couple of hundred?"
lady (kinda impatient now): "yes"
me: "Well, that's it! Wow"

agree w/ eventer: someone should call again to confirm

geez...i don't know if calling again would help. it seems like the information they're giving out is very unreliable since everyone is getting different responses. however, from the high school seniors that i've talked to at various college visits, it seems to me like a ton of kids were waitlisted. it doesn't seem like only 200 were waitlisted. but maybe when they said 200, they weren't including the kids who were on the "legacy courtesy" waitlist.

I took my name off, so I guess the number is 199. Don't forget to consider the people like me who chose not to be on the waitlist. Good luck!

Yale has 859 on the waitlist, so it seems like Harvard might have more like 700. The 200 might be non-courtesy waitlists or whatever but it seems like there would be more than 200 total since Harvard has taken 200 off the list in past years.

Has anyone even confirmed the existence of the "courtesy waitlist". I made a thread about this a while ago and no one really said much. As a legacy who was also waitlisted at several other top schools I find it kind of annoying that all legacies are assumed to be waitlisted simply to appease alums.

Has anyone heard anything more about the waiting list (by talking with a school counselor or calling the Adcom to see if they might clarify the number)? I tried emailing the college to inquire whether I could visit with the regional officer for my area when he comes visiting to the Los Angeles area this coming weekend (and next week), but I received a short response that they get too many requests to interview during their recruiting visits and cannot accommodate such a request. I then wondered who would be reviewing all of the files in May if the school does intend to select candidates off of the waiting list--since many/most of the admisisons officers are indeed on the road and trying to recruit for the class of 2012. We won't have our regional officer to advocate on our behalf...any thoughts?

I'm assuming 700 as the number. Two people reported 700 while only one (me) heard 200.
