I’m currently in high school but I know I am going to college for premed as my major, but I was also wondering if I could minor in nursing so I can work as an RN throughout the rest of my Premed schooling and then furthermore into medical school? I plan on becoming an anesthesiologist so obviously that is a lot of schooling. I was just wondering if it was at all possible to minor in nursing on the side while I finish my studies. Does anyone know?
Your plan won’t work. Minoring in nursing won’t get you to pass your boards which is what is required to work as an RN. And working a job as a medical student isn’t a workable plan as well- there’s a reason why med students do things like sell plasma/sperm and it’s because there is no time to hold down an actual job.
You CAN work as an EMT or paramedic while in undergrad (many pre-meds do) so why not investigate the training required to get certified in your state?
No, you can’t do that. As @blossom said, that is a whole different schooling plan.
Also as they said, EMT may be a good way to go.
As far as I know no college allows you to “minor” in nursing.
You are vastly underestimating what it takes to become an RN. It isn’t an “on the side” kind of thing, ever. It is possible to go all-in, major in nursing, work as an RN for several years after college, and then apply to med school (or pursue the training to become a nurse anesthetist, or NP, PA, etc.). But you would need to fully commit to a nursing program, and hopefully avoid alienating peers and instructors alike by revealing an attitude that a nursing career is “less than” and that you’re only treating it as a stepping stone to medicine.
If you really just want something you can do “on the side” then yes, getting your EMT certification and/or your CNA certification would be undertakings of the right magnitude, and good ways to get your feet wet in health care.
