Nursing Schools

My child is looking to attend a direct admit nursing school, but is concerned she does not have the grades to get into schools she wants. GPA is currently 3.2 with 27 ACT at a very rigorous high school. Has taken bio, chem and physics. Her list runs from Miami of Ohio, to University Tennessee to Penn State, among others. She likes the bigger schools and would like to get away from the Northeast. Any thoughts on chances of getting in to these schools? Any suggestions for others for direct admit?

You might get better information in this area!

The nursing forum that thumper mentioned is the place to ask questions. Lots of good, honest advice and suggestions. Keep in mind that it is difficult in some schools to get an idea of the nursing stats regarding GPA and ACT/SAT as they have higher standards for admission than the general population of students. Some schools with direct admit now look at grades in chemistry and have requirements in that area as well. If her stats fall in the 75% she has a better chance of admission. It is a highly competitive field. Best of luck to her. We need great nurses!

When we were looking last year, Miami’s nursing program was not based at the main campus. It looks like that may have changed - the website mentions a new cohort starting at Oxford in 2018. Be aware that new programs have growing pains, and no NCLEX pass rates to compare against other schools.

You’ll also want to see where the clinicals are. They could be 10 minutes away, or two hours away. It really depends where the school is located, and where the hospitals are they have relationships with. Again, a new program like Miami O may struggle in this area (but they may piggyback on the clinicals that are already in place at the regional campuses).

My daughter is attending the University of Cincinnati, which is direct admit.

There is a direct admit list in the nursing forum. Please note that it was recently confirmed that Ohio State is no longer direct admit, even for honors students.

Depending on where you are in the northeast, there are many good direct admit programs that are not outrageously expensive.

Thank you!
