NY EOP Eligibility

I am going to be a senior this year and I'm currently attending a very competitive high school. Due to my lack of effort in my freshmen year my GPA is slacking, but since I have been working hard and my grades have been constantly getting better. I feel that the only way I will be able to go to a decent college will be through EOP. My parents are separated and I've been living with my mother for almost all my life. Due to a recent argument, I have moved in with my father a month ago. I am not eligible to qualify for EOP under my mother since she makes too much money. However, my father has no income as he is retired. My question is if I just recently moved in with my dad, will I be eligible to use him as my main legal guardian to qualify for EOP? Thank you in advanced

While on face you only file the FAFSA, please be reminded that as part of the EOP process, they will ask for the income and assets of both parents regardless of their marital status.

In addition when it comes to filling out the FAFSA, you would use the income/assets of your custodial parent (this is most likely your mom).

In cases of joint custody, you would use the information from the parent that you lived with most in 2012 (to file for the 2013-2014 school year). This would be your mom (since you just recently moved in with your dad). In cases where you lived equally with each parent, you would use the income/assets of the parent who made the most money (mom).

I’ve looked at a couple of EOP applications and I’ve noticed it has a step mother option. My father is remarried and my step mother is retired as well. And technically I’ve started living with my father on May 25th, so when its all said and done I would have spent most of 2012 living under my father’s roof.

There is no stepmother “option”. You will have to include bothyour father’s and your stepmother’s income/assets on the FAFSA. For EOP, you will have to include the income assets of your mother, your father and your stepmother.

Income includes all taxable funds received by the household for general use. Funds may come from sources such as wages, dividends, interest, social security, disability pensions, veteran’s benefits and unemployment benefits.

For 3 people (you your dad and your stepmom) you would have to fall under $35,317. However, as part of the paperwork, the school will send you a supplemental submit information about your non -custodial parent, award letters for both your mother and your father, tax information, etc.
