NY Times Article (4/22) - "Cornell's Worried Image Makers Wrap Themselves in Ivy"

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/04/22/nyregion/22image.html

From the article's title to the body of the article itself, almost all of it ed me off. This is bad press for Cornell. I applied ED to this school and I can't wait to arrive on campus this fall. I can't stand listening to the image **** or Ivy League heirarchy nonsense. Worst of all, I hate that it seems that such a substantial group of Cornellians subscribe to the petty inferiority complex.

[quote]
Let the college's standing drop in publications that rank universities, he said, and "my value as a human being feels like it's dropping."

Wow. That's an embarassing quote.

lol.........

That article is the stupidest thing Ive ever seen. "Farmer Ivy"? How about:
-The only Ivy with the least grade inflation
-the most couse offerings (i.e. most diverse)
-best engineering program
-most academically challenging undegraduate
-most loyal alumni
-more than just ivy glitter (i.e. Dartmouth, Upenn(excluding Wharton), Brown
-has top twenty schools in every field unlike every other ivy league school

:anyway, Im glad the group wants to improve Cornell's image, but give some better quotes come on! (to placate some, this group represents less than 1% of the undergrad population)

Like it or not, Cornell does/did have an image problem. We insiders (students and alumni) know what a terrific and special place it is. There is nothing wrong with trying to improve your image... and lettting the secret out about how wonderful Cornell is. You can count me as one of the "most loyal alumni"! By the way, regarding the quotes, often news reporters will interview someone for hours, and pull out the worst sound bytes. I usually decline media interviews for that reason.

That's hilarious

ur exactly right Munited, tahoe im glad u take a stand against the evil media

The reporter is a grad of Rochester, if that matters to anyone.

Yeah, I always decline media interviews too.

serious question: If Cornell wasn't an "ivy league" school, would anyone apply there?

Cornell has one of the best engineering schools, and architecture schools, in the Northeast.

It has the best offerings in the Northeast, and among the very best in the country, in various areas such as: agriculture, hotel administration, industrial & labor relations. It offers top programs in the biological & physical sciences. Many areas in the humanities and social sciences are also quite strong.

So yes, people would apply to Cornell regardless of who they play sports against.

That can't be a serious question considering that he goes to Penn State.

Don't answer this guy. He's looking to incite a defensive argument.

I first heard about Cornell because it is an Ivy, but then I wanted to go after I visited the campus and talked to friends, parents' friends, friends' friends, etc about Cornell. Now I'm a sophomore here, and I truly do love it. Which is probably why I'm posting here. I agree that Cornell is very underrated, and all of the jokes about it are only slightly true.

wow, the question was a joke.

the post you quoted was me listing the STEREOTYPES for ivy schools. I just said there was some truth to the cornell one because of two people in my HS class. (and if you don't think a lot of kids look at cornell because it is the easiest ivy to get into, you are in denial. That doesn't mean it isn't a good school, which are the words people will put in my mouth.

wow....thats quite an article

I don't feel that the Image Committee is bad or anything...Cornell deserves to be recognized by others.

lets get this straight. Why should Cornellians feel inferior, we're one of the top schools in the world and the nation. For all those who claim to have the inferiority complex, you are not inferior. Out of the thousands of colleges in the United States you are eaisly the top 1%, and as for the hundreds of thousands of collegs across the world Cornell is number 12. Cornellians dont feel inferior, all it is that all the kids who go to the top schools have an inherent tendancy to rib other top schools. For all Cornellians, you're the top 1% of the world, hold your head high.

i'm not a part of that committee, and will never be. Buuuut, hopefully they can do something about schools like WashU, Duke, and Penn being ranked ahead of us. Give me a break.

I agree....
