NY Times "Whats the matter with colleges"

I entered this contest and although I didn't win I got this email:

Thank you for your entry in our contest. More than 600 college students participated, and the winner and runners-up have been selected. As we said in announcing the contest, the winning essay will be printed in the Sept. 30 issue of the Magazine, and the runners up will be published that weekend at nytimes.com.

But here's the twist: We were so blown away by the entries, and by the window they offer into how college students are thinking, that we want to post them all online. We're designing an interactive feature that will allow nytimes.com users to search the essays by theme, college, class year and other attributes, and that will let users share and discuss the essays.

Since we didn't say at the outset that we planned to post all the essays, our lawyers say we need to give you permission to withdraw your entry now if you'd rather that it not appear on nytimes.com.

To withdraw your essay, click the link below to indicate your preference. If we don't hear back from you by 12:01 a.m. EDT Thursday, Sept. 13, 2007, we'll assume we have your permission to post your essay.

If you're happy to have your essay posted, we need a few bits of additional information from you. (Actually, we asked for most of this already, but not everyone remembered to include it with their entries.) Click the link below to provide us with a title for your essay, the name of your college or university, the year of your graduation, and your hometown and state. If you provided this information already, please do it again; our web team will be eternally grateful. We need you to provide this information by 12:01 a.m. EDT Thursday, Sept. 13, 2007, so don't procrastinate.

did anyone else from cc get the same email? i guess i opted in since I just checked it today.

What's the point of this thread? Didn't it say that everyone who submitted will get published online?

No, initially, it said only 6 will be published. Too bad I didn't have time to write the essay, because I had a 15-page paper and a final the day it was due. I knew what I wanted to write though.

I got the e-mail too and I didn't win.

I don't think I had much of a chance of winning since I kind of made an argument on how the Internet (and distance education) would make universities effectively useless.

I'm somehow surprised that it was only 600+ entries.

I wish I had participated in it. I found out last minute though. :(
