NYC day schools rank higher than bding schools

I have to be careful here, its too small a world. I'll just say I was class of '76 and some of my best friends went to Buckley.

From peterson's

brearly NY, NY
Acceptance Rate
23% of students who applied were admitted

Trinity NY, NY
Acceptance Rate
25% of students who applied were admitted

Collegiate
Acceptance Rate
44% of students who applied were admitted

I dont know where you find the 20:1 statistics, maybe you can point me to some source?

Are you out of your mind? Where did you get those numbers. Google the NY magazine story on NYC admissions the numbers are laid out for you.

i got the numbers straight from petersons

<a href="http://petersons.com/pschools/code/instVC.asp?inunid=2401&sponsor=1%5B/url%5D">http://petersons.com/pschools/code/instVC.asp?inunid=2401&sponsor=1</a></p>

<a href="http://petersons.com/pschools/code/instVC.asp?inunid=333&sponsor=1%5B/url%5D">http://petersons.com/pschools/code/instVC.asp?inunid=333&sponsor=1</a></p>

LOL. It's completely outdated. They even have the head of the schools wrong. Check recent sources.

FYI, the page is "Last updated: 03/12/2007." That's not really completely outdated.

The average SAT score at Brearley:

CR- 727
M- 689

The average SAT score at Andover:

CR- 666
M- 682

found from Petersons.

However, don't be misled by these numbers. Brearley (besides the fact that it's all-girls) could offer the same spectacular education as Andover/Exeter, etc. Sometimes, it's the people themselves that make the difference.

For example, even though I feel like I learn more both in and outside my classroom at my current school, I'd say that the kids at my old school were much more frantic about perfect grades. People from New York, especially the Westchester/city/Long Island sections are notorious for being these college-crazed, self-pushing overachievers. There is a sophomore in my school who left Brearley to come to MPS because she couldn't handle the pressure. Some schools in the NY area, public or private, can be as cutthroat as any prestigious boarding school.

I'm not bashing Brearley; it's a great, competetive school with enormously high standards. I'm just saying that the "prestige" of the school can also depend on the atmosphere.

what's MPS?

Miss Porter's School

But, the information on it is. For example the head mistress they list for Chapin hasn't been there for 4 or 5 years.

I think we should conclude that the NYC prep schools have some fanastic qualities... but boarding schools also have fanastic qualities. The boarding schools outrank the NYC prep schools in some ways, but that also goes for the NYC prep schools.

What makes a school superior to the rest? Is it SAT scores? College placement? Student to teacher ratios? All schools are different. Some schools which are strong in some areas, aren't as strong in others. It also depends on your idea of superior. While I post on this board primarily looking for boarding school information, I agree with Shannyc that this board should also include some more information on popular high schools. Well, thats my input!

IluvA's, how many more excuses do you guys have up your sleeve? "Don't be misled"? It is what it is. The families at Brearley aren't any more or less agressive than the families at Andover. This is an absurd assertation. Brearley is known for it's top notch academics and brilliant student body. Thus, the reason for the high SAT scores. Schools like Hewitt and Marymount are in NYC also and the students come from the same type of families as Brearley and Chapin. The reason B and C have higher median SAT scores is because of the schools and the students these schools accept. If it were about the families we would see similar numbers at the schools not considered tt.

liza42, I concur.

I noticed my poor spelling, assertion.

um you totally forgot andover recruit a lot of PGs every year to play sports for them. These PGs are educated elsewhere for 4 years, typically have lower SATs, and lower the school's SAT average.

plus remember, girls' national SAT average is higher than guys'. So the more equivalent thing is to compare brearley girls to andover girls. :-P (which also makes sense becoz most PG athlete are male athletes)

I guess this answers my question of "how many excuses do you guys have up your sleeves?".

there's a difference between reasons and excuses...maybe you should go ask your english teacher what's the difference between those two words, or go look up the dictionary

After reading some of these posts on this thread, it only reinforces the glaring fact that some cities are associated with a certain type of behavior and thanks, but no thanks, I am happy to say my kid will go to a NE BS...
