NYC day schools rank higher than bding schools

i am refering to
"hpflrent, after reading some of the post on this board, it only reinforces the glaring fact that people see what they want, and hypocrisy reigns supreme. "

yo deerfield man if i were u i would choose chicago over yale...

chicago econ > yale econ

p.s i hav to post here coz my box if full and i cant pm..i dont know why the delete option doesnt work

I said that to hpflrent, because he/she was commenting on the behavior of the NYC residents who posted on this thread, without noting that the New England bs posters, in particular your friend bearcats, exhibited similar behaviour on this thread. Evidently, hpflrent didn't notice this and I find it to be hypocritical. Do you see it otherwise?

Wow, what happened to this thread since when I checked it the other day?

I propose a new york day school/boarding school transfer week. Bearcats, blairt and me will hit up NYC for a week, we'll sit in on some classes at Collegiate, Brearley, Dalton, Chapin etc. Shannyc and eell45 can chill at Andover, Exeter and Hotchkiss.

It'll be a good time. We'll have a meeting afterwards and discuss what we think, haha :)

LOL!! Thanks for some levity, bigblue09. This is hilarious, but not a bad idea! I'm game.

I think we should invite D'yer Maker for an impartial mediator.

sweet, i m going to brearley, so i can chill with all the girls, mmkay?

yeah...I'm definitely not going to Collegiate.

Sign me up for Dalton and Chapin

EDIT: I'll follow Shannyc's advice and swing by Spence as well

bearcats. just to show you no hard feelings, I'll offer you some advice. Forget Brearley, visit Spence or Chapin, if you're unattached. Don't ask me why, just trust me!

anything but collegiate!!

wow, this thread turned from mean to nice =)

after school we can go shopping on fifth avenue and blow another thousand dollars like i did last week....
parents were NOT happy. but it was my birthday....

opps, im at andover.

we can go to newbury street in boston and blow a thousand dollars. hehe

LOL! Good plan bigblue09!! I see you're a thinking man.

eell45 maybe we can have the meeting at downtown cipriani and hit bungalow 8 afterward.

eell45, did you attend any private in NY before going to Andover?

I guess I said that because of the way you started posts out with things like:
"grow up" and "are you out of your mind."

Just reminded me of why I'm so glad I left that area after being raised there. It's really nice to walk down the street and someone says, "good morning" or holds a door for another person or when checking into a hotel in pretty much any other city in the country and the desk clerk says, "Hi, how are you?" instead of just glaring at you.

Yes, there is a whole other world out there, and as I said, for us, rolling countryside and safe towns hands down seems to be the right place to send a child to school.

As far as this crazy statistical battle, there are so many places to get statistics and we could all pick and choose what we want to post to make a certain school look like the greatest school in the country, but my point was, they are all great schools, sometimes you have to look a little deeper than stats to see why not everyone wants to send their kid to a local day/boarding school. I thought it was funny that at a revisit this spring, we were sitting at the table with another family that was from NYC and the parent said they just wanted to get their daughter out of there so she could see that the world is not concrete and horns blaring. So, we all have reasons for making the choices that we do.

Well, I am not going to return to this thread because it is so negative and really doesn't do anyone any good, but I felt like I should clarify my point for those who are continuing on this thread.

I hope that everyone will find the place that fits their lifestyle and values because again they are all spectacular in their educational value.

hpflrent, I see your point. But, I don't think this thread is negative, certain aspects yes, like the exchange between bearcats and me. But, overall I found this thread educational and I'm sure others must've felt the same.

Shannyc, thanks for the nice response. I did hate to see the exchanges between you and bearcats. It is obvious that you both love your school and that is the reason emotions run so high sometimes, I'm sure. It is actually the most telling part of the whole issue; it means you both have made the right decisions for yourselves and your families. Best of luck to both of you!

Glad to see this thread has calmed down a little.:) I consider myself someone who has no dog in this fight. Went to Buckley, then on to BS. My mother actually worked at Chapin (many, many years ago - I believe Mrs. Berendson SP? was headmistress). Shannyc, you have a valid point. The top NYC day schools are as competative to get into as the BS (probably more so), will give you a great education, and have an excellent track record at getting their graduates into top colleges. I can see why you'd be a little frustrated that they don't even get a mention on this board.

However, this is a board devoted to prepschools, and for the vast majority of kids and parents who post here, Chapin/Collegiate are not an option. Even for the very small percentage of people in NYC, these schools really aren't option. How many kids does Chapin take in 9th or 10th grade? I suspect only a handful.

Also, to suggest and/or imply that these schools are vastly superior to the top BS is an exaggeration, and not likely to win you many friends on this board. AESDC, etc have a national reputation for a reason, and some have facilities that rival small colleges. Also, the BS experience is fundementally different than the day school experience and does offer certain things that no day school can give you.

Finally, you need to remember that many people who post here are extremely bright and accomplished and have nevertheless just been rejected or waitlisted at the BS's you're putting down. Going on about how vastly superior Chapin (and by implication you) are to a BS they or their kid may have been rejected by only a couple of weeks ago is not going to win you any friends. I know that wasn't your intention, but a bright Chapin girl like yourself should take a minute and try to see things from someone else's perspective.:)

BTW - I like the idea of setting up a "foreign exchange" between BS and NYC day schools. Maybe we'll let you have the Tommeister for a term.:)

lovemeister is not going anywhere.....he's too valuable for us BS circle to lose. BS cannot be without its love.. sorry, NO WAY

i'm going to jg melon's and forgetting about all of this school talk!

Hey bearcats, lemme spread the love, aight? There's enough for everyone.
