I was recently accepted to New York Institute of Technology with a selected major of Communications Arts. I wanted to do video production or advertising, but I had a sudden change of heart and want to follow my family's medical background.

I understand that some say that I can just change it after taking the general education classes, but I am excessively paranoid because the Pre-Med program is in the total opposite of the spectrum than communications arts.

I was wondering if anybody knew how I could go about changing the major before hitting college.

Or perhaps there is a way for me to major in communication arts, but still be in a pre-med track.

You can get into med school with any major at all provided that you complete the pre-med courses. Sit down with the requirements for your original major, and see whether there is room in the program to fit in the bio, chem, Ochem, calculus, physics, etc. that are necessary for the pre-med sequence. If the classes won’t all fit during the regular year, how many would you need to pick up during the summer, or in a post-bac pre-med program after graduation?

But Check with your school when you need to officially declare major and if as a communications major the other classes that you want would be available to take. This is not something to just guess or assume. Some schools lock you into a major and your classes are prioritized as such. For instance if you declare as a communications major, the higher level bio may not be available if you are taking others class’s toward your official major,

I would absolutely contact the school. Some schools you don’t officially declare till going into junior year. Others it’s very difficultto switch around. Cal poly is notorious for this. It shouldnt be that difficult, but don’t guessor take chances without concocting your college.

They will happily answer your question much better than we can for sure.
