Nylc

does anyone know anything about the Naoitnal Young Leaders Conference...?

I got nominated for it when I was a junior in high school. I spent a few days in Washingtown D.C. learning about govt and doing mock govt things such as debating bills and voting on them. I enjoyed going to different places in the city but I hated the other stuff. The tuition for me back then was $965 but I got a $765 scholarship and raised $1400 in my community. I guess a had good marketing skills in order to raise that money. All I did was send out letters and allowed my name and reputation to speak for itself. The money flowed in pretty quickly.

I guess I was little naive at first but after completing the conference I realized that it wasn't as influential or important as I thought it was going to be. Students should go just to experience the city and meet other people, but not to take it too seriously. The program may be better now than it was in 2000. The housing accomodations were terrible. Three to four people in a room barely big enough for two and some of the smallest portions of breakfast food I ever had. On top of that, the other high schools students were the most arrogant people I have ever met in my life. That is just part of my own personal experience and I can't speak for the other conferences.

anyone else...?

Don't go man its not really worth from what heard from other people. It is a waste of time and money too.

Yeah, it was a hassle. You were busy from 7am to late at night. I usually didn't get to bed until midnight. Not the most relaxing of days. If you are on a financial budget, your money can be better spent elsewhere.

what about the national youth formus on medicine..? is that worth the money?

Nope, National youth froums for medicine, suck too. Truly, I have really been thinking about joining these "Youth" and "leadership" programs, but all I have heard on College Confidential is that they truly suck and that that they are a waste of time and and money, and not to go unless you are a bored rich kid with nothing to do over the summer.

By the way what town are you from? and what school? because ithink we are both from Jersey. Best of Luck.

disagree my son loved national youth forum in medicine...did atlanta emory
loved living in dorm for 10 days...did one day in medical school ..one day center for disease contro..one day vet school where he saw dog surgeries..
also great speaker each center has a differtn guest speaker and his was
dr neal schulman (sp)..who wrote doc holiday
he kept in touch with a few friends following and funny thing is he learned
he didnt want to be a doctor and is studying econ at dartmouth now
but he always felt that experience at emory was great

my friend went and she had a great time at the nylc (i don't know what it was specifically).

i've been getting letters from nylc for years now and the impression i get and that my counselor told me is that it really is just a summer program for kids who don't have any leadership roles to beef up their college applications but isn't of any real prestige or substance.

then again whatever you put into the program is what you'll get out.

I went to the program and it is not a waste of money. You can put the experience on a college application and it opens lots of doors. I also made a bunch of friends and we all keep in touch over facebook and skype now all the time! It is a great experience and it helps in high school as you begin to talk about all of the different things you will experience there.
