Literally just bombed one of my math regents, and I really don’t want to retake the exam. I have a 99-100 average for the class, but I made a bunch of stupid mistakes on the test. Will colleges care about the bad grade when I have really high grades on my other regents (90+)? Looking to major in bio/biomedical engineering so i really don’t see how math matters that much.
Most schools other than SUNY’s and CUNY’s wouldn’t care - OOS schools probably don’t even pay attention to it, nor do schools that get a lot of OOS students.
Was it one of the required for a Regent’s diploma tests or the one for the Advanced Regents? If the latter, don’t even worry. If the former, consider taking it over again over the summer if you want or if if might impact your final grade.
Today is Day 2 of Regents-- that means we’re talking about the Algebra I Regents given yesterday.
So you’re a freshman in high school. Hang in there. And make sure your remaining grades-- particularly in Algebra II & Trig-- are where you want them to be. A high grade in Algebra II & Trig ( a much harder course!) could certainly wipe out worries about your Algebra I background to the SUNY/CUNY schools that would care at all.
If you are a freshman I’d recommend you get off of CC until your junior year. It is good to take school seriously and know that college will be on your horizon, but it is too early to start college planning.
For now just focus on being the best “you” you can be. Spend your time:
–Working hard, learning, and doing as well as you can in the most challenging curriculum you can manage.
–When the time comes study for standardized tests.
–Become involved in activities you care about and work towards making meaningful contributions to those activities.
–Enjoying spending time with your family and friends.
Wait to see your score and then decide. My younger daughter just took it yesterday. She is a great math student, but she would have had a ton of errors if she had taken the test and left at the 2 hour mark without checking over the entire exam again at least once. She said most people did that. She stayed almost the full 3 hours and checked over her test more than once, catching many silly errors. Whether you choose to retake this one or whether you don’t, make sure for future exams that you take the full amount of time and check over your work often. It’s super easy to misread a number or have your eyes skip over words like “not”, “average”, etc.
When you see your score, remembering there is a curve, you can decide whether you need to retake it. That might depend on whether it could effect the advanced designation if you want it on your diploma or if it effects National Honor Society invitations, etc. if you are a freshman (or younger and taking advanced math), then you have years to decide whether you want to retake it. My older daughter did have a couple of friends who decided to retake algebra 1 regents exams more than a year after they took it the first time.
“Curve” doesn’t begin to describe it for both the Algebra I and the Geometry Regents exam. It’s Christmas in June… they give a tremendous number of points on both exams.
