NYS SUNY (with in state tuition) or other state school?

My D accepted to Binghamton - considered the golden ticket for the State University of NY system - tuition is 23K with room and board. She was also accepted at UT Austin (tuition and board is 48K) and Virginia Tech (tuition and board is 38K).
We are still waiting on the scholarship packages from UT and VT - but the 23K at Bing will be impossible to beat - and then there is the travel. I have come to learn that UT is a selective school (as is Bing and VT also not to shabby) - but are these non NY public schools really going to give her something she wont get at Bing? is it really worth the financial stretch for an undergrad education? I welcome all comments
Thanks

Congrats on your daughter’s options.
Well, UT and VT will certainly provide better opportunities for internships during the school year - Bing is not located in the thick of commerce and industry.
It will also give her perspective on how people live in other parts of the country - especially UT, which has a definite Texas vibe with a sorority culture that is unlike anything at the SUNYs.

But these things may not be worth their price or even affordable for you. My guess is she will do well wherever she goes.

I’m from Long Island and the common thinking around my area is that if you get into Bing, you go to Bing if your other options are around the same level and for more money (i.e. you’re not deciding between Bing and Princeton). I went to Binghamton and loved it. I had plenty of opportunities and I’m at an Ivy now for grad school. My other friends who graduated are doing fine, mostly living in the city with nice jobs and good memories of college. Lemme know if you have any specific questions about the school!

We live in NJ and my DD went to Bing. I think that the cost/value ratio with Bing is going to beat the others.

From and education perspective I can’t think of anything UT or VT will provide that would be worth that price difference. And I believe you can get internships in NYC from Bing which you can’t from the other two.

@flyaround, um, you know where VTech is located, right?

In any case, to the OP: what major? NYS STEM majors get a scholarship to SUNYs, no?

We used to live near SUNY Bing, and I took some engineering grad courses there. I think it is the reasonable choice.

NYC is about 4 hours from Binghamton, so I assume post #4 relates to summer internships. In theory, students from any school can apply to summer internships in any city.

UT and VT are both huge sports schools, and that might make a difference to your daughter if that’s the atmosphere she’s looking for.

Piggybacking on Purple Titan

If your daughter is in the top 10% of the class at her high school and is a STEM major, she will get free tuition at Bing

She also needs to work in NY State for 5 years after she graduates or she will have to pay the tuition back.

@sybbie719 @PurpleTitan she missed the top 10% so we pay. I am super proud regardless. she did get a ride at UK and just about a tuition waiver from SUNY Albany - but if she is going SUNY we think Bing is better bet.

@twoinanddone the sports thing and the huge university is a draw. as is the alumni network.

the scholarships from UT and VT will tell the tale - thanks all
