Reflection

Strengths: recommendations, essay. I think my essay will make the most impact

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I’m still holding out hope for acceptance
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Rejected Columbia University, Accepted University of Rhode Island w/ a 20k scholarship

Objective:

SAT I (breakdown): 2000 (710 CR, 630 M, 660 W)

Major Awards: National YoungArts Foundation, Nashville Film Festival Screenwriting Competition runner-up, published in Scholastics’ Best Teen Writing of 2015.

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Film festivals, school newspaper (lead editor), yearbook committee,
Job/Work Experience: 2 years of seasonal work at a regional amusement park, 6 months of work at a locally-owned bakery. In addition, I have also planned, built and operated student-staffed haunted houses and Halloween celebrations at both of my high schools.
Volunteer/Community service: 100+ volunteer hours at homeless shelters and rehab centers in low-income neighborhoods. 50+ at soup kitchens, cafeterias, etc. Also volunteer at local Pride parades every year.
Summer Activities: Student exchange programs in China and Taiwan
Common App Essay: Not my strongest work, but compelling nonetheless. I avoided rehashing my coming out story and instead wrote about how film and television effected the way I perceived myself and my sexual identity when I was younger, then segued into how I plan on making a career out of writing queer characters for film and television so other kids don’t have to feel the same way in the future. It felt very much like a memoir version of The Celluloid Closet, but it got me in.
NYU Essay: Arguably the most persuasive thing I’ve ever written. I talked about queer history and Greenwich Village, how it would help ground my writing in truth, etc. I also mentioned to professors who I studied under in the Tisch summer program by name, and I know at least one of them has a hand in the admissions process.

Teacher Rec #1: My Creative Writing teacher (8th-11th grade). Travelled to Europe with her once, spent a summer volunteering at a local homeless shelter with her, won grants for her department, etc. I didn’t get to read my rec letters, but I have faith that this was phenomenal.
Teacher Rec #2: My English teacher (11th grade). I also travelled to Europe with her, and I babysat for her regularly. She told me that her letter focused more on personal responsibility and preparedness for adulthood than academics.
Additional Rec: Screenwriting teacher (12th grade, different school). We became very close in the two and a half months before my application was due and she’s equally passionate about queer/feminist issues as I am. She also holds the same degree I am pursuing. Her letter might be less personal, but I imagine it was very helpful.

Other

School Type: Urban Public (9th-11th), Private Boarding (12th)

Reflection

Strengths: Essays were good, but I think my portfolio was the deciding factor.
Weaknesses: GPA.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: The bottom line is that I’m an extremely competent screenwriter, and I’m passionate to boot. Thankfully that trumps academic mediocrity when applying to art school.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted by Emerson (Writing for Film and Television), University of Cincinnati DAAP (Urban Design). Withdrawn from USC, GW, SCAD.
