NYU Acting Audition 2016

So today I had my Acting audition for Tisch at NYU! I applied Early Decision 2. I decided to just post the run-down of what happened for anyone that might be looking and also to maybe hear some feedback! So if you have questions don’t hesitate to ask and if you have any comments on your opinion of what happened just let me know.

My scheduled time to audition was 9:00am so I got there with my mom at around 8:30 and we waited in the common lounge area at Tisch. There were about 30 or 40 other kids there, some acting and some musical theater. Eventually, the admissions coordinator came and gave an introduction to the program and walked through the basic steps of what would happen throughout the audition today, and post audition. He then took a picture of all of us on his ipad (individually).

For acting, we went upstairs right away and into a little studio room and did a movement warm up. Like your typical drama movement and voice classes, you walk around, avoid someone without them knowing, slow motion walking, etc. It was fun and relaxed and allowed you to clear your head. IT was nice too to be able to interact with people who hopefully will be your future classmates! We then got a moment to sit down in a quiet zone in the room and have a moment of peace with ourselves before going back out into the common type of room.

In the common room we were randomly split up into four groups, each of which would audition individually in front of ONE auditor. So I was in group two, which meant I went to studio 2, which was downstairs. The groups averaged at about five people per group, and we were allowed to decide amongst ourselves who would go when, and I decided to go third.

We had time as we waited in the quiet space to go to the bathroom, change clothes, anything you needed to do. So I changed out of my movement clothes into my audition clothes and rehearsed in my head. Musical theater kids were allowed to go before you as they came in from their other dance or singing auditions and just cut the line, which made the process a little longer, but it really wasn’t that bad.

Once I got called into the room, I introduced myself. We were specifically told we did NOT need to slate, which was kind of nice I guess. So my auditor named my monologues, asking if they had changed and said to go ahead and do them in that order. I did and I honestly think I did pretty well, no stuttering, no forgetting lines, etc. So yay!

He then asked me to sit down and we had a “conversation”. He asked about why I chose my monologues, how I prepared, why NYU, what I would do if I couldn’t do theater, a quality of mine that was not my best, etc. I think I answered well and honestly felt prepared and not under too much pressure. The whole process was not too stressful. I think the most nerve-wracking thing is waiting beforehand and the typing of the computer as he watches your audition.

We talked a little and he eventually said I had a “bright personality and good energy about me” and I really hope that’s a good sign. I’m only worried because he didn’t ask me to do my monologues a different way, or work on them or anything like that. What do you guys think? Please leave some input! I’m curious to hear other experiences and I hope this could help those of you auditioning soon! Break a leg!

hi!! I was at the exact same audition as you, pretty sure we where in the same group too!! I was a blonde girl wearing a pink sweater (i was kinda talkative. ANYWHO if we where both in geoup teo we mustve had the same auditor. He did not make me do mine again or differently either! He didnt say anything about them. Maybe that was just him! Good luck

Good luck to both of you! I auditioned on the 11th, but at 2pm. I didn’t get much feedback for my monologues or my interview! She just asked me to do my second monologue in a different way.
