NYU & CAP 21 summer program

pre-college!

Jessica, you are attending the 6 week CAP21 precollege program and NOT the Tisch/CAP21 progam offered through NYU, correct? I am guessing that is the case because from what the NYU Web site says, they don't accept or reject anyone for the Tisch progam until early April. If I am wrong about this, please correct me. And congrats on your acceptance.

yes, NMR! I am attending the 6 week CAP21 non-NYU program!
thanks!!!

Does anyone the full extent of the rule saying that you have to be 17 to stay in the NYu dorm? I recently applied to the NYu summer program, and i am going to be a senior, but I'm only 16. Any info would be great.

Theatregenius3;
When will you turn 17? If by summer then you're fine.....for Cap21 conservatory's (6 wk. program) dorm rules. As for Tisch (4 wk. program), you're fine (at 16) as it is supervised.

hey for those 18+ers in the Professional Program, I created a facebook group. Just search CAP21, and it'll come up!

I was just accepted into the CAP 21 precollege program...I auditioned on the 25th of March (last date) and I'm excited!!!

My child applied to both the pre-college CAP21 and the pre-college NYU Tisch summer programs. She was accepted at CAP21 last month and just received her acceptance into the Tisch program. Is one program considered "better" than the other?

MTX3MOM - I don't think one is better than the other from what I have learned but it is more about what program fits your daughter better. CAP21 pre-college is 6 weeks, allows for more free time to roam around NYC, Tisch's CAP21 is 4 weeks, is highly supervised & participants are able to earn college credit. Also on a more practical note, Tisch's CAP21 includes housing, whereas at CAP21 you are responsible to make your own arrangements, even though they provide you with suggestions where to apply. If you already have housing set up, then this would not matter :).

MTX3MOM - I can't speak to the CAP 21 program but our son did attend the pre-college program at Tisch that is associated with CAP21. (It was a 3-week program.) It was excellent. The faculty was great - they pushed hard but were very supportive. The kids were fantastic and bonded quickly - they still email one another. And earning 6 college credits was great. Our son learned a lot there, most significantly that this is what he wants to do and NYU is where he wants to do it. It also helped him decide to focus on vocal performance within MT so he's going to Steinhardt in the Fall. The bottom line is that this was an outstanding program and a great fit for him. Hopefully your daughter will have a similarly excellent experience regardless of which program she chooses.

I think I finally found the right forum. I'm new to this and I have been trying to get info on the Tisch CAP 21 Summer Program. Zedgar, can you explain what you meant by your son wanted to focus more on vocal MT so he decided to go to Steinhardt? Can you apply to both Steinhardt and CAP 21 in Fall? Did he decide to apply to Steinhardt and not CAP 21? Do you have to audition for Steinhardt? Did he meet Steinhardt faculty during his summer at CAP 21? Also, do many of the Tishch CAP 21 kids audition for Fall the next year, and are they likely to get in bec. of the training? Finally, does CAP 21 focus on the college audition when they are there during the summet. My D got into T-CAP 21 for this summer and we need to make a decision by Friday. We haven't heard back from other programs yet....but most likely she will attend NYU.

I'm not zedgar but generally speaking, Steinhardt offers a BM in musical theater and Tisch/CAP21 offers a BFA in Drama in a Musical Theater conservatory program. A BM degree is in a Music School and has a primary focus on music training and vocal performance with some acting and dance training. Someone who wants the main focus to be vocal performance in a musical theater program, might opt to do a BM degree such as what Steinhardt offers. CAP21 tends to weight voice, acting and dance equally. Acting is as important as singing training. There is also more dance in CAP21 than in Steinhardt. You need to examine each curriculum.

No, applicants to NYU can only apply to ONE school within NYU. So, a MT applicant would have to choose to apply to EITHER Steinhardt or to Tisch.

My guess is that those attending the Tisch summer program do not come in contact with Steinhardt faculty.

Some who attend the summer program eventually get into Tisch but certainly NOT all or they'd fill up the CAP21 class alone! Do not choose to go to the summer program as a ticket into the BFA program. It doesn't work that way. Do it for the experience and training and also to sample the program in case you may wish to apply later. Think of it as training for ANY potential BFA program down the line. I imagine if you are a standout in the summer program, they may remember you, but you have to apply and audition to NYU/Tisch like anyone else and the odds of admission are difficult. Attending summer pre college doesn't equate with being admitted to their BFA program. There are some in the BFA who attended the pre college but were viable candidates as well for the BFA. As well, many who have attended the pre college do not get admitted to the BFA at Tisch.
