NYU CAS Freshman Taking Questions

Hello, I'm a freshman at NYU College of Arts and Sciences, hoping to major in International Relations. Just a little bit about me: I grew up in rural PA, where I struggled through my first two years of high school, getting Cs and Bs. I then began to care about my academics starting junior year, worked as hard as I could, and ended up at NYU. If you have any questions about academics, financial aid, social life, adjustment etc., just ask me. I recently finished my midterms, so I figured I am somewhat qualified to make this.

Assuming you had a low overall GPA. What part of your application (essay, recommendations, EC, etc) you believed had helped you get in to NYU?

Hi WednesdayTomato, do you mind giving me your opinion on my NYU Stern Admission? Here is my thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/new-york-university/1408471-what-my-nyu-ed-chances.html

Thanks in advance.

My GPA was about 3.56 at the time of my application (I had gotten all A’s junior year). I’d say there were three important factors that contributed to my acceptance:

Improvement. Even if I lacked stellar grades throughout my high school career, the fact that I matured and received excellent grades in challenging courses showed NYU that I was finally taking my education seriously and excelling.

ESSAYS! NYU receives an overwhelming amount of applications; I believe one of the highest application rates in the country. The readers are dealing with hundred upon hundred of these short essays meant to distinguish oneself from the crowd. Your supplemental essays need to be original and something that will relieve the readers from their long list of boring, typical essays. I wrote about my love for Celtic music in one of my essays.

Another important thing is that you need to prove to ad com that you’re truly interested in attending NYU. I cited specific programs at NYU and NYC that would contribute to my career aspirations which could not be found at other universities I looked into. Show NYU why they’re right for you.

This is certainly not as important as my previous two reasons, but SAT scores. I had a 2220 superscored, which I suppose was above average for the applicant pool. If your scores aren’t out-of-this-world, don’t fret. NYU does a great job at viewing their applicants holistically. I have friends here whose scores weren’t amazing, but had some awesome ECs and leadership roles in high school.

Hi! I just applied Early Decision to CAS. I was wondering if I actually had a shot to get in. My GPA and test scores are a bit low, but I have strong EC’s, Volunteer hours, essays, and letters of recommendation.

NYU CAS is my dream school. My GPA and test scores are low, but my EC’s and volunteer work and recommendations is the only thing I’ve got going for me. Anyone want to chance me?

GPA: 88.125/100
on 4.0 scale (converted on my school scale by my guidance counselor)- 3.6

Yes my test scores and GPA aren’t the best.

Course Load/APs/Honors
