Chance me with other strange factors?

Hey guys, I am a senior applying to CAS at NYU. I applied Early Decision II. These are my stats:

Essays:

Very strong, interesting essays for both supplemental and Common App. My college counselor said it was the best he had ever read, no exaggeration.

Recommendations:
Two strong teacher recommendations and another one from my Mock Trial Team lawyer advisor.

Also, at my school guidance counselor recommendations are required, and my guidance counselor and I had a terrible relationship. He told me he would write on my recommendation that I cared more about the grades than the actual learning, which is ironic considering I am far from a straight-A student.

Other factors to consider:

I am also ridiculously bad at math and science. I had a C in Advanced Geometry (geometry with precalculus elements for freshmen, a level above honors but below AP), a B+ in Advanced Algebra (accelerated algebra with precalculus elements, also a level above honors but below AP), a C+ in honors Precalculus and currently, a C in AB Calculus.

I have an upwards trend with a 3.1 freshman year, 3.45ish sophomore year, and 3.75ish junior year.

I have gotten the FA Change already, but who knows what that could mean.

I am a mixed Japanese/Korean female from a highly-ranked public school in Connecticut.

I think you have a high chance, but that is also very dependent on what school/major you applied to. Gallatin is more holistic than CAS and Stern, for instance (I’m assuming you’re not applying for Tisch since you didn’t mention a portfolio). I’d suggest looking at NYU’s data set to compare your numerical stats:
http://www.nyu.edu/ir/pdf/cds/CDS_2013-2014%20UPDATED.pdf

As you can see, your SAT score is higher than most accepted students, and are near the 75th percentile. However, since you are Asian, you may be expected to score higher than applicants of other races (I’m Asian myself and this is one of my biggest worries, lmao). Only 16% of students from your GPA range were accepted, but the NYU admissions officer I talked to said that they also take upward trends and course load into account.

According to the Common Set, the most important non-academic factors for NYU are extracurriculars activities, talent/ability, and personal qualities. Your extracurriculars are very strong, and demonstrate that you are well-rounded while also having a genuine interest in politics, social issues, and creative writing. Your essays (may I ask what you wrote about, by the way?) and teacher recommendations will also certainly help. I’m confused about the guidance counsellor recommendation though. That is a different person from your college counsellor, correct? Did your college counsellor also write you a recommendation? If the negative things that the counselor wrote don’t match up with your other recommendations, perhaps the admissions officers would understand. You show a lot of leadership qualities, initiative, and passion, which is what NYU looks for.

@‌VandaAree

I applied to CAS. My Common App essay was about my evolution as a writer, and the different “phases” I went through. My supplementary essay for NYU was about the young millennial being the next “Lost Generation,” and then I went off on that by saying what I had to offer to counteract it. I also wrote about how much I wanted to learn from a diverse student body.

My college counselor, who did not write me a recommendation, is different from my school counselor, who wrote me the bad recommendation. I didn’t list on my Common App that I was Asian though, so I’m not sure if that would be taken into account.

Junior year, I had straight A’s except for honors Precalculus, ugh. But according to Naviance, my school’s average GPA acceptance for NYU was a 4.05 weighted, which is exactly my weighted GPA.

@bismarck1996‌ Your essays sound amazing! I think you have a pretty good chance of getting into CAS! The maths and science is definitely a drawback, but NYU also looks for different types of people to fill their class, and you are a writer (not saying you can’t be good at both creative writing and STEM, but you know what I mean).

bruh ur sat score 2 loww herp derp nd pfft dishonor on ur cow.

bumpp
