NYU, Cornell,University of Michigan, Darthmouth, etc.

hey. my names dave. and i go to a school thats eh.. i guess you can call it competitve but not too much like those national-recognized high schools. i am aiming for top to semi-top schools such as..
NYU
Darthmouth
University of Michigan
Boston College
Northwestern
Cornell

Im aiming for a major in a music major or any music/related major during college. any other recommended schools with a excellent music program would be appreciable.

here are my stats
Gpa: unweighted : 3.8 weighted : 4.5
rank : top 15 percent.
Sats: 2150
Sat 2s: Us history- 740 Math Ic-730
Took the most challenging courses available since sophmore year. ( Freshmen year, they would not allow me to enroll me in honor classes because of my 8th grade grades, but apparently, I showed them up with excellent grades during the freshmen year)
5 APS taken ( school offers only 6)
US History, Stats, Calculus, Literature, Spanish
Ecs

-Staff of Serendipity 4 years.
-Performed at Avery Fisher Hall, Carnegie Hall for select choir.
-NJ County Choir for all 4 years.
-NJ Junior High Regional Choir for 2 years. (8th grade and freshmen)
-NJ High School Regional Choir for all 4 years.
-NJ All-state choir. all 3 years. ( seniors cannot audition for all-state. )
-All Eastern Choir ( Hoping this would be my specific hook)
-Select High School Choir all 4 years.
-Select Mens Choir all 4 years.
-Brass Ensemble 3 years.
-High School Musical all 4 years. .
-High School Marching Band 3 years. (sophomore to Senior)
-Spanish Honor Society 3 years ( Available to sophmore and up )
-National Honor Society 2 years. ( Available to juniors and up)
-PALS- Senior year. ( only available to Seniors). This is where you are a mentor for the upcoming freshmen and guide them through the year. NOT EASY to get into. Must get recommendations, keep a certain grade, etc.
-Christian Club Officer 3 years. ( Sophomore to Senior).

Yes, I do not have a whole gigantic list of awesome Ecs like other people, but I have stuck to these ecs consistently and incessantly, and I have enjoyed these activities undoubtedly.
So what do you say are my chances?

staff of Serendipity?
what is that?
anyway, i was in the same situation, my stats are a little better and eC a little weaker but if i could turn back time, i would have applied Cornell ED

All those NJ choirs you listed...aren't they the same thing except at different levels?

Anyways you have decent grades and test scores so I'd say NYU and University of Michigan are matches. I'd also suggest applying to Cornell or Dartmouth ED/EA.

serendipity is a school magazine basically. and to sup. ion really understand your question. yes they are most def. at different levels but they are not the same thing. Each choir is audition based and performances take place every year, annually . but if your thinking wut im thinking when u asked that question.. asking arent they the same thing.. well to really easily answer your question.. : yes they're all choirs duh -_- doesnt it say right next to each specific kind of choir? lmao. anyways. thx for your advices guys =)

Reach: Dartmouth
Matchy Reach: Northwestern, Cornell

Safety/ Match: NYU, University of Michigan, Boston College

any moree advice?

i agree with slipper exceot maybe i will put dartmouth as match/reach too.

Dartmouth is harder to get into than Northwestern. Although Cornell is probably halfway between Dartmouth and Northwestern.

With new SAT, it's important to give the breakdown as writing matters much less than cr and math.

For cornell and dartmouth you need to raise your SAT I and SAT II scores. Cornell likes to see high scores on IIc. IMO cornell, dartmouth, norwestern are all reaches, with the others being matches (not safeties).

i got into both cornell and northwestern and didn't apply to dartmouth, i do not think these schools are like HUGE REACHES, they are like high matches/low reaches. My math + verbal + writing granted was a bit higher, but I think you are good to go.

btw, if ur from NJ, i think your chances at Northwestern go up b/c their biggest applicant pool is from the midwest, and i believe it is a lil easier to get into a midwest school from the east coast. Likewise, I believe ppl from California may have it a lil easier applying to east coast schools than someone from NY, NJ, PA, etc..

slipper,

Dartmouth isn't really known for music while Northwestern is. I wouldn't be surprised if NU is harder to get in for music (I do agree it's harder to get in for most other cases). I have a feeling that NU isn't gonna just look at academics but also the applicant's skill level in whatever specialty he/she wants to pursue. An audition may be required.

gwj,

If I were you, I would look into Yale, Johns Hopkins and Rice since they have good music programs with solid academics. USC, Oberlin, Indiana, and Boston U have good music programs also.

i am an entering freshman at ucla. i was in your position just a year ago. i had a 3.9 sat I-1350, sat II's-math 2-650, writing 650, spanish 790. i did a summer program at cornell (cornell university summer college), which boosted my application with all the ivy's. they told me that my personal statement can make or break me!!! my gpa was great my scores were competitive and my personal statement was great. i didnt spend to much time on it i just simply wrote truthfully and made sure it was clear and easy to read. i did get in to cornell as well as georgetown, usc, ucla, berkeley, and the other uc's. yes i am a california resident! i decided to attend ucla because it offered me the most money, it has a great medical school, great reshearch opportunities, fits me as a person (very important!), and i could see myself there. Cornell is a great school, i absolutely loved it there but it didnt fit me. i felt a bit out of place. i come from a very diverse highschool and i found cornell, like most ivy's, to be centered around one demographic. nyu was something else, it is diverse, in the middle of the greatest city on earth, and is always busy! it can be overwhelming sometime. my advice to you is to focus on your personal statement, be truthful, and follow what you want to do. an old spanish saying that my mother and grandmother used and i used on my cornell app. is a great way to look at your situation: "El quien es perico, donde quiera es verde!" losely translated "a parot will be green regardless of its surroundings." the school you choose will not make you it will assist you in developing. if you see it this way it will alieviate the stress. trust me.
